    Water in lower unit

I drained the oil out of the lower unit on my 06 150 HO Etec today, and I think there is some water mixed in the oil. I bought the boat used so I do not know if the oil has ever been changed. I drained the oil in a plastic container to see if there was any separation. Indeed there was a layer of blue-green oil on top and a layer of greenish-white oil on the bottom. The FSM says some water may be in the oil, but it does not give specifics on how much is too much. Is there anyway to check for leaks without special tools? I can post a pic of the oil if I need to.

You would need a way to pressure and vacuum test the gear case, 15 pounds of each and hold for five minutes.

Dealers have pumps to perform this task.

My mechnic has a handheld vacume/pressure pump that he threads into the top hole of the LU and tests for leaks that way then I guess that points him to the next direction as to what is causing the leak- shaft seals, seals on fill/drain screw seal etc.....
