    Choke it Up!

Hey guys, Ive had my new Nitro Z6 for two weels and been bustin the bass at choke canyon along the state park shore line in the morning but no such luck in that area mid day or later. I do not know the lake well enough to venture too far off into the sticks to search for bass later in the day. Can anyone tell me where I may try after top water wears off? Is there a map of hot spots I can get or something before I go get lost in terrain I don't know. Anything I need to be aware of? Any help on this lake would be great. We live an hour away and this is the closest lake and we like the action so far.
    Happy Bassin

For Choke I would invest in a Sonar/GPS unit.

Welcome to the board Joe. I love fishing that lake. I like the area down near the dam and around 5 fingers. I have fished up the lake just above the 99 bridge. A very good area up there. If you need to learn the lake better I suggest a guide. Jerry Dunn is one of the best there, 361-449-7647. Book a half day trip and tell him you want to learn to run the lake. It will be woth every penny. By the way, stick around our board here.

Welcome aboard. Did you try this post on Texas fishing forum? The dam(spillway) area useally holds some afternoon fish and you can run over to there from south shore without fear of hitting any thing.

great advice guys thanks for your help. By the way I hooked a big unknown size bass on a black buzz the other morning but he drove himself down deep under the moss, he had to have been 10+. I held on as long as I could but I was drifting into the bank so it finallly snapped when we turned on the engine to back ourselves up.......what a thrill it is!

Are you launching from the South Shore boat ramp, or Callihan? The South Shore area is usually good in the morning, but you can find some hawgs in 4 fingers later in the day. The 4 fingers area is straight across the lake from the S. Shore boat ramp. That's where I'd be fishing. That's probably what Skip meant too. I've never heard of a 5th finger.

ok I have'nt made it to the south shore ramp yet. Morning are really good at the calliham shoreline on the moss. I'll try south shore in the afternoon next time I go out.

It probably won't be good until late. It's a good early morning and late evening area. I'd fish the 4 fingers area afternoon. There's only 1 place in the Callihan area I fish. I usually stay in/around the 4 fingers area.

A GPS w/mapcard will help a lot. There are many old road beds and pond dams you can fish on this lake. You can also get a "HOT SPOTS" lake map at Academy, Sportsman's Warehouse, and sometimes Wal-Mart. Those maps also show the old pond dams and road beds.

    Nitro,

Try the night fishing, been twice already and the areas mentioned above are good. If up in the San Antonio area, go by the Sportsmans Warehouse, the guy that runs the fishing dept is a guide down there also, his name is Shane. He showed me on the map alot of good targets and what baits.

Good for you keller on your GPS. I dont have one ....YET! but maybe in the next couple weks. We went to the dam side and my wife had good luck on the south shore with cranks in the afternoon. I caught one with my Rat-L. Loooks like a good area. North shore could beat you up to the shore if you don't have at least a 24 V TM to keep a distance to cast with these gusty afternoon winds.

I might be selling my Lowrance GPS soon. I'm thinking about getting one of those new Humminbirds with SI. If you're interested in buying a GPS unit at a discount, let me know. I'm about to head to BPS to go play with the display models.

You're probably right. I don't have anywhere near 300 waypoints. I guess I need to get down there and start marking spots.

    Re: Choke it Up! (CCNitro7291)

With the GPS look for the pond dams around Calliham.....there are a ton close to the ramp. Even with the hotspots map get to a close spot in that Nitro and look for the drops. Never caught a huge fish hitting pond dams out there but the numbers are there......as well as outside of 4 fingers on the south side there are some bluff banks that get deep and I've had a 30 fish day just on one point there......again, not huge fish but 2 to 3 pounders all day.
