A wind energy company was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay more than $8 million in fines and restitution after at least 150 eagles were killed over the past decade at its wind farms in eight states, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

NextEra Energy subsidiary ESI Energy pleaded guilty to three counts of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act during a Tuesday court appearance in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It was charged criminally in the deaths of nine eagles at three of its wind farms in Wyoming and New Mexico.

In addition to those deaths, ESI acknowledged the deaths of golden and bald eagles at 50 wind farms affiliated with ESI and NextEra since 2012. The birds died in eight states, prosecutors said: Wyoming, California, New Mexico, North Dakota, Colorado, Michigan, Arizona and Illinois.

There should be a really big windfarm near the CNN HQ.

Having flown and driven all over this entire country multiple times, these windmills are fugly. They are an eye sore and ruin the beauty of the land.

Most of our electricity is hydro. Plenty of people lost their farms and towns to build the TVA lake system, but it has provided this area with electricity since The Great Depression.

While that is not good it pales in comparison to the damage coal has done to people. My Grandpa worked the coal mines in Kentucky and West Virginia for years. I got to watch him cough up his lungs into a spittoon for a period of 10 years before black lung killed him.

Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as "black lung disease," occurs when coal dust is inhaled. Over time, continued exposure to the coal dust causes scarring in the lungs, impairing your ability to breathe. Considered an occupational lung disease, it is most common among coal miners.

Reducing the usage of coal fired power plants and increasing the number of subsidized wind farms for the last 15 years. Wow! What a milestone

Well when you shut all the coal plants down that'll happen eventually.

All the strip mines these days have to refilled and planted. We have several around here that leave smooth rolling hills. Some have trees grown and others are growing.

I am sure once the wind quits blowing we will go back to coal.

Having been around a lot of the country myself, if we're going to shut an energy source down based on this criteria, we're ALL back to the Dark Ages, literally. Never seen a good looking coal, gas, solar, nuclear, or hydro plant that wasn't ugly.

Wind would be good if there was a way to harvest the energy produced that is not consumed on demand. One thing to thank about is this as well. A wind farm was put up that would supply enough power to run 45,000 in the Twin Cities. Take an average of 4 people per home and that supplies power to 180,000 people. Think of the cost to put in the wind farm and the small dent it makes for a city of 4 to 5 million.

They are an eye sore..... especially in some our treasured views............ Coming on to Cape Cod there is a few in the cranberry bogs.... kind ruins that view.

It would really be great if those windmills were made in the US.

How much electricity was used to kickstart those turbines? Where is that electricity going to come from when it's gone?

Really. How many nuke plants would it take to power the country? It takes about 800 wind turbines to equal the capacity of a single conventional plant. A conventional plant produces power 24/7 while a wind turbine can be run AT BEST 75% of the time. It produces nothing when there is no wind.
