Re: power pack optical eye replacement (ryecreek)

On my Johnson 175, the EET, Timing Sensor, Optical Eye,

is on top of the motor ( timing wheel). It is directly across

from the Timing Pointer. It has a set of wires that plugs into

it. It's held on by two screws. It is recomended to replace this

    when changing out power-pak.

Correct but the covers have to be removed to get to it. You need to remove all of the flywheel cover bolts to get to it and the main flywheel bolt. Then you only need a phillips head screw driver to replace. Hey we never said it was going to be easy we need to eat too .

Remove the top cover, three screws, remove the bolt in the timing wheel and remove the wheel, six more screws on the hold down brackets and remove the EET bracket, flip it over, remove two more screws and the EET is loose.

Reinstall in reverse order and check the timing with a timing light and your good to go.

so is the pistion stop tool needed or can i get by without it. is it just to stop the motor from turning over or is it for setup/alignment too?

It depends on how tight the bolt is on but here is an old trick you can use. Get some cloth rope, remove #1 spark plug and insert the rope into the cylinder then take your wrench and try and remove the bolt. When the piston hits the rope it will "bind" the piston from rotating and will let you remove the bolt. Once you tighten the bolt it will spin the other way and release the rope and you can remove it.

You can't get a screwdriver down there and nothing to latch onto anyway. No need for an Impact. The Bolt has a 1/2" head on it and you don't need to pull the flywheel only the timing wheel.

    This should help you. http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/...13d6b

Re: power pack optical eye replacement (ChampioNman)

finally made it to my boat at my brother in laws (he uses it more than me) he's no mechanic so i did the install. the shop he got the powerpack a optical eye from swore they were omc parts. but i think not all markings were different and not 1 package or box said omc
    started with the eye:
set the marks to tdc and made match marks on the pointer removed bolt with a 3/8 impact so not to rotate eng. ccw replaced eye and torqued bolt with a drop of loctite. (was gonna do true tdc deal if timing adj was needed)
    Powerpack straight foward:
    unplug 6 bolts install reverse
try to start and just cranks bachfires (at exhaust) twice so i pull no1 plug no spark. checked all 6 with timing light nada all 6 are dead. triple checked all connections and tested layanard at key
did he buy a junk part??
did i do somthing way wrong

Re: power pack optical eye replacement (Lockjaw)

    got it figured out
had him do the process of elimination with the old parts turns out the new eye is bad. well see if they give him a new one.
and yes it turns out the parts are aftermarket junk. he could have saved $150 buying aftermarket crap on the net(he paid $370 for eye and powerpack)
