Control Box problem

1990 Johnson 70 VRO (#VJ70TLESB). Have lost all increase in throttle with the binicle (put it all the way up, nothing happens, almost no tension on the binicle). Then I started having trouble getting it out of neutral. This weekend I replace both control cables (throttle/shift), they needed it anyway, one was cracked, the other had a pretty good kink in it. I still can't get it out of neutral.

I'm assuming the control needs attention, refreshing. Is that something you can take to a regular marine mechanic? Should I consider shipping it somewhere? Anyone have a recommendation of a shop in the Orlando/Winter Park, FL area? I usually fiddle with stuff myself, or used to take it to a guy that's now retired.

Yes with some mechanical skills you can do the replacement and install. Order the replacement box from your local BRP dealer. The older control box parts are hard to come by. He may have some locally. Bring him your model number for your motor.

I had a similar problem with my control doing this. I could go to either foward or reverse nut not both. It would stick in neutral and would not move. There is a gear (either 2 or 3 teeth) inside the control that meshes with the shift/throttle plate. If that gear was moved when you had your control apart, that could be the answer. Easy fix just frustrating.
