How does one go about cutting a hole in new carpet when replacing old carpet? I was thinking about gluing the carpet down first, over the hole for the pedestal seat, and then feeling around for where the hole is, and then read somewhere to use a soldering iron to melt the carpet around the edges of the hole? I assume any soldering iron will work? Sounds a little tricky to me. Wonder if I might end up melting too much of the edges. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Not sure what is best but I glued my carpet down first then carefully cut out the hole to the edge of the pedestal. It’s been just over a year now but haven’t had any issues.

I used the soldering iron on mine. Came out nice. Practice on a left over piece first. My iron was the pen shaped type
Use a hole saw on a drill but run it in reverse. Do it when the glue is still tacky. Once you remove the section press down on the edges with your fingers.
Use the soldering iron. Easy to do and less chance of damaging your newly installed carpet.
