Free Kids’ Fishing Events Start This Weekend
RALEIGH, N.C. (June 2, 2009) – Fishing for something to do this weekend that’s fun and family oriented? If so, 40 free kids’ fishing events are being held across the state in celebration of 2009 National Fishing and Boating Week, which starts Friday.
Supported by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, in cooperation with Neuse Sport Shop, Trout Unlimited, Bass Pro Shops and the U.S. Forest Service, these fishing events provide opportunities for young anglers to learn fishing basics, such as casting, knot-tying and tackle selection, and try their luck at reeling in a variety of freshwater fish, many of them stocked by the Commission, including trout in the mountains and channel catfish in the Piedmont and Coastal regions.
Participants registered at any listed event will be entered into a statewide, random drawing to win a variety of fishing-related prizes. The grand prize, donated by Neuse Sport Shop, located in Kinston, is a freshwater/saltwater lifetime fishing license, valued at $450. First prize, donated by the N.C. State Council of Trout Unlimited is a lifetime freshwater fishing license, valued at $250. Other prizes, donated by Bass Pro Shops and the Wildlife Commission, include rods, reels, tackle boxes and fish identification booklets.
Local sponsors for many events will provide prizes and gifts to registered participants as well.
While these free kids’ fishing events are scheduled for only a few weeks in June, the Wildlife Commission offers plenty of year-round opportunities to go fishing in North Carolina’s public, inland waters. To make finding a spot to fish easier, the agency has a list of free fishing access areas here.
