    gearcase question on 225 etec

i have a 2006 225ho 20 in motor and putting on a bay ext kit. wanting to know if i can use a gearcase off of my 1996 200 johnson which is a 25 in motor with the bay ext kit. is the gearcase , drive shaft and shift rod going to work. would like to keep my factory gearcase stock so when i sell the motor and update i can put the factory gearcase back on and it will all be original. its going on a bay boat 23ft and not looking for performance but not wanting to buy another gearcase. thanks for any info my model and ser e225dhlsdf 05122239

25" drive shaft is the same number, Shift rod is different and you will need to order. If you have a 20"-25" spacer you should be fine but I would call BRP Customer service to verify.

I will have to go with Fred on this one as Iv'e never dealt with spacers before. Anyway Guy's, I sure do appreciate your vote of confidence --- Maybe I should run for President next election year on the Outboard motor ticket. How about a Pope / Jackson team?

Re: gearcase question on 225 etec (92javelin)

Alot has changed with gearcases in 10 years.

Will the 1996 fit? - Yes (with the correct shift rod as previously mentioned).
Will it hold up? - Probably not as long as the 2006 gearcase that came with your E-TEC. Gears bearings and other internals are what have changed and been beefed up. Not to mention the 225 HO has alot more whoopass than the '96 Johnson 200...

My suggestion would be use your existing gearcase and just order the correct shift rod. 25" HO models are available and the 25" drive shaft should fit.

    Just my .02 cents...
