I have a 2005 Mercury EFI 3.0L on a Triton Tr196 and am experiencing the following issue.
The majority of the time the motor runs fabulous, with zero problems starting, idling, jumping out of the hole, and running WOT. However, after fishing on very hot days (85 degrees F or more) for several hours the motor will die as I am getting on plane (somewhere in the range of 3-4000 RPM). It seems to mostly occur right at the moment the boat hops up onto plane. It will run perfectly all day and then this will happen several hours in. When it dies, its like someone flipped the kill switch - no sputtering or chugging, or any alarms. Then it will not restart for anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours afterwards. Once it starts back up it will usually run perfectly normal, although it has died in the same way after restarting it a couple of times. I have taken it to multiple shops only for them to tell me they can't figure out what is wrong with it because it runs fine for them in the shop. It has nearly perfect compression, new water pump and impeller, new spark plugs, and new low pressure fuel pump.
I know that the previous owner had the computer replaced at one point. I am thinking that this issue could be caused by a faulty computer or bad wiring based off of a few posts I have read on here. I don't believe it is a fuel issue because I have ran through several tanks of gas since this first started happening, the fuel pump works fine and has been tested, I can smell gas as I am trying to restart it after it dies and when it does start again it's really smoky like a flooded engine.
Has anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas on what could be causing this?
