I’ve read several articles and watched several videos demonstrating side scan. Realistically how fast should I be able to drive and still use side scan? I lost all data and the bottom smoothed out about 6 mph.

should not happen. Be sure to level your transducer at 4-6mph (vs on the trailer in the garage). YouTube videos out there how. I use the coin technique as easy.
I followed the instructions on the Lowrance install video I can definitely try that(just watched it, definitely need to adjust). How fast should I get these details at then (when it’s level)? It’s mounted at a good spot, several inches from any rib on the hull.

Sidescan is meant to be operated at idle speed ( 2 - 4mph). That will give you the best picture and detail. I have seen pretty good imagery up to around 25mph, but if your transducer is that deep in the water, you stand a good chance of knocking it off at some point.
It will be effected by water turbulence, if mounted on the jack plate you may not be able to improve it
Thank You Leon Pugh
I wish I had a jack plate lol. Its mounted on the transom, left side in a flat spot away from the motor and other transducers.
I have read to not put a transducer on the port side due to prop wash. My Pro Guide V16 tops out at about 28 MPH and I can read okay up to that speed. It's not as nice as at 4 MPH but I can see bottom and some detail.
Hmm I'm on the port side now, the video I was watching had it on there so didn't think it would be an issues. Guess I'll need to keep that one in mind once I try leveling.
Perhaps prop wash wasn't the correct term. Again, this is something I read, but it had to do with the prop and causing an issue.
Cavitation ?
As a follow up, leveled it per the coin method at a lake yesterday. Too cold to fish up here so no problem launching and reloading a couple times. Works great now. Reads a little bit faster with details and depth at any speed.
