Lowrance Ghost install tips and my quick review

Installed my Ghost late last week. Other than my old body being sore from contorting to install the mounting bolts, the install went very smoothly. Thought I’d post a few tips / info that may help others when they do their install:

1.) the 4 bolt holes used with my old motorguide Tour 70 did not all line up-oddly, only three did. My MG tour came installed with my boat from the factory so no idea what the deal was. I was able to use 3 holes and then just drilled three new holes to complete the mount install.

2.). Having a longer 9/32 drill bit is helpful if you feel like drilling the holes with the mount in place. Otherwise, the mount itself will prevent you from doing this with a standard sized bit.

3.) Use a small socket wrench and a deep 7/16th socket for the mount bolts/nuts. Really helps when reaching deep inside the bow to secure those bolts. I used two identical sockets to secure the 6 bolts.

4.) The lift assist part of the instructions refer to washers. There are no washers - Lowrance made a production change at some point and eliminated the need for washers. The directions are confusing though because they refer to the washers but no washers are listed in the required parts for this step.

The pedal fits perfectly in my boat’s built-in TM tray. I was worried about this because my 2008 Triton doesn’t have the biggest tray but it fits well. Note, based on my research the Ultrex and New MG Tour Pro pedals will not fit in my tray. Just something to be mindful of if you don’t want to cut out a new tray for your boat.

I was able to fish for a couple hours with the Ghost yesterday. It’s the bomb. I was also super worried that pedal feel would be lacking but it’s just not. Someone on this forum told me it would feel a lot like my old MG Tour and that’s spot on. I think there might be ways to modify the pedal tension but I think it’s perfect. I like some pedal resistance and it gives you just the right amount in my opinion. It is not at all a “loose” feeling pedal.

I performed all the calibrations, downloaded the Lowrance app; registered my product and made sure it had the most current firmware (it does). Spotlock worked perfectly and even came in handy already as my buddy and I located some bass in one spot. And when we were fiddling with fish photos or Re-tying, I just spotlocked. It’s so helpful I can’t believe I waited as long as I did to get this trolling motor.

only one minor issue-the direction indicator is jumpy and glitchy. I’ve already contacted Lowrance and expect they will send me the upgraded white Teflon disc to fix that issue.

    I’m a happy camper.

    A new tip:

After not hearing back from Lowrance regarding my sticky/jumpy direction indicator, I just decided to fix it myself. When I removed the indicator, I noticed the excess adhesive on the metal washer on the indicator itself. It was subtle but it was there. I took a rag with some goo-gone and cleaned off the adhesive. Tested it on the lake yesterday and it’s fixed. Smooth as pie now.

I keep forgetting about the strap on front when I go to deploy the motor, lol.

I also got to test the mount and locking mechanism yesterday when running in decent chop. I didn’t notice any bouncing. I do think the Troll Tamer is a cool product but I’m going to hold off on it for now. I think if you install the bounce buster properly, it should be fine unless you fish big water a ton.

Another question that I researched a bunch, but never really found any clear answers... The TMC-1 Puck placement. I left mine on the deck, and moved it around a few different places. Ended up working just fine on the mount, so I hard mounted it, and tested it out yesterday. Works perfect and stays out of the way.

I mounted the puck on my front deck about a foot from my Lowrance HDS Gen 2 touch and 2 feet from the head of the trolling motor when deployed. Before I decided on that location, I downloaded an emf meter and found no emf issues in this position. The TM has worked flawlessly this far in three outings.

I do wonder though if perhaps the newer units from all brands would cause a problem. Maybe they emit more Emfs or use more power.
