    co-angler or fishing partner

what do most of you ask of your partners , when in a tournament's .not sure what's fair .....I can see a split 50/50 ....is good for the non boater ....I'm sure I don't need to tell any one on this board about the cost of keeping a boat up and running ....and ready to go fishing in tournament's .....this is ben my 1st year fishing in tournaments ......so what do you hard core tournament anglers charge for a good day of tournament fishing on the back of your boat.

I dont "charge" anything. If they offer i take, if they dont offer i usually dont ask them to fish again.

From both perspectives, I try to offer enough to cover the gas we used if we are on their boat, and on the other side, I'd like to be offered something for the gas. In a draw tournament situation, with strangers, half the gas is the minimum. I like to offer to cover the gas for the day since I know as a boat owner there it takes more than gas to fish.

Fishing with friends is different, it always works out one way or another but usually nobody wants to take the others money.

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (Rstrelec)

I have fished as a co-angler for a couple of years now in the BFLs and just fishing around with guys on here.. I will usually give 20 to 25 dollars unless the boater ask for more. Most of the time guys are glad to get the 20 to 25. And I have had some to take nothing at all when I asked.. but the main thing is to ask the boater what would be fair..

I have fished as both the boater and non boater.. as the non boater I usually try to split the cost down the middle for a tournament. We would also split the pay out. If im strapped .. i let my partner know and we work things out .. it all comes around in the end.

Me and Papaw do it a little different. If we take his boat I pay the entry if we take mine he pays. That keeps it simple.

I just alternate boats for each tournament or trip depending on who I am fishing with. I do not really fish draw tournaments so everyone I am fishing with is a friend. I would not take their money if they offered.

I realize that owning a boat has expenses so when my partner and I fish...he pays the entry fee and i buy the gas. We split 50/50 what ever would be won out of the boat. only time that is different is if the entry fee is $100 or more and then we usually work it out to be even.

I like to make sure the truck and boat are full when we leave and fill up when we get done then split it all 50/50. When fishing with someone else I usually buy breakfast or lunch to help with the cost of oil etc.

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (fishkicker)

In a bfl, bass weekend, state federation tx.....$25 dollars = 6.25 gallons gas-------mmmm.. consider the man towed his boat for you to fish out of, paid boat payments each month, most likely prefished 1 or 2 days................i,d say your fishing partner for the day felt jepped . Sorry I call it like Ive seen it!
On the other hand if its a friendly get together team format like BBC, trading days ,you tow his boat, if he picks you up splite gas in tow vehicle and boat ..what ever works for both parties ....just agree to something before the boat hits the water
At the same time as a boater you should be fair to the non boater

Since I sold my bass boat this spring I pull my partners boat anytime we go fishing and never accept money from him for truck, if we burn about the same fuel I usually slip him a little money for the boat.

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (Frank A)

Frank A since you want to call me out.. I said I start with 25 when i ask about the gas and also ask if this is enough for gas or whatever the boater wants to use it for and yes some guys ask for more, which I have no problem giving more..and some will take nothing.. but I too have spent money prefishing and driving to the lake and eating and sleeping arranagments and entry fees, but they (a boater) did not tow their boat to the lake just for me nor did I force them to buy a boat that has a big payment.

Point is, I want to make sure I pay my part and I go out of the way to do so...

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (fishkicker)

I am fine with about 1/2 the gas for that day. In a team event split entry fee too. I still have to tow my boat to the lake and make all associated payments whether someone fishes with me or not, getting the boat to the water is part of being a boater, if you dont like it dont use your boat. How much gas I used prefishing is on me, not my co-angler, how is he suposed to know if I spent a week prefishing running 70 miles a day or if I didnt prefish at all. I make that investment in fuel for me, not for my co-angler. If a co-angler tags along prefishing and gets the same knowledge I get, he will offer a fair amount for fuel, I also benefit by having a second line in the water, another mind thinking and help launching and loading.

As fishkicker says, co-anglers spend the same on travel expenses and then take a chance on who they draw and are at the mercy of who they end up fishing with.

    Agree
I will be fishing the State tx this year as a co-angler-first time in many, many yrs also
I plan to ask my partner what I need to give him----I know from his side what it takes too
But-I will not make his payment for him---this we will settle on before we launch----just how we play

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (lostinlocust)

hey guys .....thank's for the info ...good stuff , it be great to have the cash to say ,come on it's on me . but I can not do that , so I'm going with the co-angler picking up tx fee and split the gas . unless it 100.00 tx then we talk it out ....thank's again for the info

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (fishkicker)

Sorry to step on your foot Paul...... I m not talking about fishing with friends, team tournament, or someone YOU have asked to join you for aday of fun. Was speaking more on "draw & Federation tournaments " that put both fishermen fishing against each other and have rules stating co angler get front of the boat 1/2 aday.
......you and most of the guys here have the right thoughts on this.... PAY YOUR PART......CONSIDER WHAT THE BOATER HAS COMING OUT OF HIS POCKET...... AGREE BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT .
I still feel at todays prices $20- $25 in MOST CASES is not enough to cover even 1/2 the gas expense. (JMO)

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (Frank A)

Frank A, no problem sir.. I dont fish the fed tx so I can not comment on them, just BFLs with FLW, and yes in most cases 20 to 25 is not enough but it is a starting point to ask, that was the point I was trying to get across.. just offer something and then boater and co-angler should talk it out..

now, lets go fishing... I will be on high rock this weekend..

Re: co-angler or fishing partner (fishkicker)

I have had alot of experience as a co-angler in Fed T's and such. First thing when I met the angler is talk about what is fair. If I am on fish hard on one side of the lake and he is the same on the other...then that is ALOT of running on both parts. We both benefit from the other's spots I feel. If we stay close to the ramp, or he has a bug up his butt to run all over the place....then that is on him.

I think $25 a day is a good starting point if little gas is burned. If alot is burned due to both ya'lls desire to go here and there, then the $$ needs to be alot more. If he burns alot of gas cuz he wants to ride the whole lake and you just are along for the ride...that needs to be discussed, but I do not think it is fair for the boater to expect the co to pay $75 or so a day for that.

Communication is key. We all know the boater's costs....gas, oil, insurance, maint, etc but the co-angler is not his cash cow either. It needs to be fair for both people. When I take my boat, I have never had anyone not offer. Sometimes I will take it...sometimes I will not. Depends on the scenario of the T. When I was a co-angler...I always offered....just plain rude not to.
