I have a 1994 Evinrude 30HP Model E30ELER outboard. During the process of replacing the throttle cable I accidentally caused the positive battery cable to short out to the aluminum boat (pinched wire). At the time the battery was not connected, however when I went to connect the battery is when the smoke show began. I connected the positive side first, upon connecting the negative side I noticed a small spark and immediately noticed my accessory switch was on at the console. I thought this was the reason for the spark. So I continue to tighten down the wing nut. Then I walked over to turn the switch off, then all this smoke started pouring out from under a panel near the throttle control. After quickly disconnecting the battery I noticed the the black wire in the wire bundle completely fried from inside the throttle control to about 24 inches back from the control unit to where three wires were spliced in that lead to under the steering console. Probably to the gauges?![]()
This also caused some of the other wires to melt together. Fortunately I had plenty of slack in the wire bundle cable (which contains eight wires) to cut out the bad section and wire in a good connection once again. After fixing everything, all seemed to work normally and the motor turned over with the key. The next time I went to the lake the motor started ok. When I took off it was obvious that something else had happened as the motor was running seriously rough. As though it was running on one cylinder?? It seemed to idle ok... but getting up on plane took forever with the engine sounding like an out of tune lawnmower choking out. I had new plugs installed this year already, and it was running great before this happened, so I am sure it has something to do with the short out.... Is this fixable... any suggestions would be appreciated....![]()
