My wife and I were visiting the mother in law last week in Thomasville. Somehow my boat followed us. I had a great time fishing High Rock and spoke to some really friendly folks at the ramps and on the lake. I had never fished there before but had been at the Southmont ramp years ago when the lake was dry. Here are the details on my trip:
Thursday afternoon 2 - 6 PM. I was headed down 8 trying to find the Southmont ramp. I passed right by it and ended up launching in Flat Swamp Creek. I stayed in the creek and caught some fish (7 in all) with a crank bait mostly (bandit 300 series chart with blue back). One was a 3 pounder on a rocky point with the crank. Some dinks on or near docks with a finesse worm. 3 keepers in all.
Friday 9 AM to 3 PM. Launched at Southmont and went to second creek after the fog buned off. 9 bass, 4 keepers one was 4 lbs. Most were caught on a 1/2 oz spinnerbait (white with silver blades) including the big one. Rip rap along the bridges / roads was most productive. However the 4 lber was caught in a cove.
Sunday 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Launched at Southmont and fished the creek to the left under the bridge near the ramp. I don't know the name of it. Caught 14, 7 were keepers. Would have had a 11 - 12 lb limit. Bridge / road rip rap was the ticket. Caught 1 on crank, 1 on spinner and the rest on a june bug zoom finesse worm texas rigged with a 1/8 oz bullet weight. Most were real shallow right up against the rocks. One 3 pounder was in 12 - 15 ft.
For the amount of fishing pressure I felt pretty good about my trip. Hope I get to fish High Rock again soon!
