I am looking at purchasing a 1998 Stratos 201 F/S with this motor on it. This is an out of state buy. I am thinking I would like to ask this guy to take the boat/engine to a mechanic and look it over. I know I should ask for a compression check. What else should I have looked at?
Finally - does anyone know a good Johnson mechanic in the Westland, Michigan area and how I might be able to get ahold of them?

There is a good mechanic for johnny/rudes in westland. Worked at a marina for 19 years I think. Now works out of his garage on the side. You might try and call him. His name is Bo and owns "Top Notch Marine Service" I dont have the number, I hope you can look it up. He lives on Huff street. He knows who I am and might help you out if you mention me "The Bullet Boat guy"
