    Sales tax

I am looking at buying a new boat out of state. I know I have to pay 7% sales tax. Some wise man told me to get the dealer to give me three invoices, one for the trailer, one for the motor, and one for the boat. I was told since MS doesnt title the motor that sales tax was not due. He said that only taxes needed to be paid on the trailer and the boat. Anybody ever heard of this?

That will probably work but let me tell you, those are the most by the book, stubborn people I have ever dealt with. I finally got my boat registered the other day after 6months, and help from a MDWFP supervising officer.

I went to the office and it took 15 mins. I carried a bill of sale for the boat to register the boat. I need to go get the tag for the trailer - I think it is done by length. I'll find out tomorrow and try and remember to tell you.

Are you buying from a dealer or an individual??? I think you only pay taxes if it's from a dealer but I could be remembering wrong!!!!

If you buy from an out of state dealer you have to pay 7% of what is on the invoice. If you buy from an out of state individual you have to pay 7% on the value of the boat. This was due to people buying from an individual and having the seller list the boat for less then what they actually paid for it on the bill of sale. The tax people caught on to this. That is why if you buy from an out of state individual they tax value not bill of sale. Motor doesn't need a title trailer only in MS.

I didn't have to pay any of that last year when I bought my boat out of state. Registration and trailer tag only.

No sales tax on used. I do know that Kitty but a new one from a dealer I do have to pay. I am sure I'll get screwed. I am sure the tax will be based on a higher number than what I am actually paying.

I had to pay 7% taxes on the motor, boat, and trailer but then again mine were all on the same invoice. If I had known this ahead of time I would of tried to get the motor on a seperate invoice just like you mentioned Gar35. To register your out of state boat in Mississippi you have to show where you paid MS sale tax, its on the registration form you send in.

I don't know why you didn't have to pay sales tax. But I know that I had to pay sales tax on the last two boats I bought out of state, one last year from a dealer and one 3 years ago from an individual, both used boats.

You got shafted if it was used and had been registered in another state, sorry. I would ask for a refund. Brand new from a dealer is the only one that gets taxed. damn government

No taxes on used boats from individuals. I just bought a boat from individual in Alabama. All I paid was registration and tag.

Bought a used boat on Jan. 5 from out of state dealer. Went today to get tag for trailer. The first thing they said was "You have to pay taxes on this before we can issue you a tag". They taxed boat and the trailer minus my down payment.

    Re: (drcrankenstein)

I don't know how the tax works, but I do know that the MDWFP boat registration form says to include a copy of the sales tax receipt for a new or used boat bought from an in or out of state dealer. Has anyone tried registering a used boat bought from an out of state dealer without sending in a copy of the tax receipt? ?

    Re: (TideFan01)

You have to pay sales tax on a new or used boat bought from a dealer either in or out state. You do not have to pay sales tax on a used boat from an individual no matter what state it is bought in as long as it has been registered before. Previous registration proves that sales tax has been paid before.

    Re: (Gar35)

Would a title from the previous owner's state serve as proof of registration?
