Here is one at the bottom.
yep, that was the one with all the dead fish yesterday...![]()
what happened??? livewells kill them?
Ok, I'll bite. No it is not the fault of the livewells;
most people just don't have any idea how much
effort it really takes to keep fish alive this time of
year. This is the hardest time of all; even a little
harder than July-August. Just turning the pumps
on automatic won't do it; even using, as some
said "a whole bag" of ice, won't come close. It
takes a lot of work and care to keep them alive,
but it should be learned and practiced by all.
I know.... I was just sayin.... I wondered what all those folks in those "recreational" boats were thinking.... just more ammo for the peta crowd.
Might I suggest that if it appears dead at the weigh in, provide a cooler or some sort of trough to put the dead ones in, have somebody in charge of it, and take them and filet them and keep them for a charity or church fish fry... just don't dump them back into the lake so the bikini girls don't have to wade through them to get in their wakemakers...![]()
Another suggestion, go to a three fish limit.. sure, it looks good to bring in a 20# sack, but, this time of year it's probably easier to keep three alive than five due to the oxygen content in the well...
I'm not trying toor be a fuddy duddy, just trying to offer a little constructive opinion. I've worked at MAJOR weigh ins (Opens, Elite Series, Federation), so I have a little insight to your predicament.
Not a bad idea at all; nothing worse than seeing
those dead fish hanging around after weigh-in,
other than maybe seeing those that are still
struggling on the surface that won't make it
anyway.
Good suggestions Nick.Ya got to keep them pumps on constantly in this hot weather, on and off every hour dont do it.

i told cliff after the team trails a few weeks ago about haveing a cooler with some ice. he said he would have one at his next tournament. everybody needs to do thier part and it starts with the fishermen. keep those livewells running and add ice to keep the water cool, especially when you start getting over 15 lbs in the livewell. also if the weigh in line is long just wait until the crowd thins out.

Like my friend Mr. Browning said, it takes work to keep fish, especially immediately post spawn fish alive, and we are killing too many of them.
You've GOT to use frozen bottles of ice, or bags of it, you've got to run aereators/recirculators constantly, and you need to add chemicals to the water properly. I use the 02 Marine blue liquid, along with two of their Oxygenator units, and it makes a huge difference. I've not had a dead fish in over two years, and that includes July and August tournaments.
We've also got to self-police. Had a guy in a tournament this past weekend who killed 4 out of 5 fish that he weighed in, because his livewell pumps were not working. He knew it when he took off, before he ever caught a fish. That is irresponsible, unsportsmanlike behavior, and should not have happened.
Pickwick is a special resource, and we need to protect her.

Yeah yeah and yeah.
Or we could go to a 2 lb dead fish penalty per dead fish.

I'd rather see tourny's go to a 3 fish limit in the summer time.......or whenever the surface temp. of the water gets to almost 80.

I agree that a 3 fish limit would cure some of the problem. It would not cure it all. The only way to reduce the amount of dead fish is to make it where a dead fish in not worth having. Like Tony said make people take care of there fish. There are many people that do and the are many that don't, but if they were to take 10lbs from your weight for 5 dead fish do you think you might be paying attention?
Done.

That would definitely help too.
