    Tournament Fishing

Hey guys I am wanting to get into tournament fishing around central ms( I guess smaller ones to start with) I have never fished in one before but I pretty much know all the rules and regs so where do I start or what tournaments or trails would be good? I boat is only a 00 Nitro 640 w/ a 90.... I also thought about BFL as a co-angler

The choices around here are: BFL's, Fishers of Men, Media Bass, and Team Trails. Team trails and Media bass have divisions that are Ross Barnett only, and Fishers of Men is Ross Barnett along with Ferguson. If you are new to tournaments you might just want to join a club. There is Pearl River Bass Club, Believers Bassmen, Mississippi Bass Club, Ross Barnett, Sportman's, Beginers Choice, and I'm sure there are more than that. You might just want to fish a few open tournaments on the rez and see how you like it(quite a few of these spread out all summer long). There is also a pretty laid back Thurs. afternoon tournament every week at Tommy's not sure when they will start them back up though.

Since you are new to tournaments I would recomend joining a club, and fishing a few of the opens. Tournaments aren't for everyone. I don't really care for them myself. I just enjoy fishing I always feel to rushed in a tournament. I do fish a couple a year though or try to. Most of the clubs will be more laid back tournaments pretty easy going, and fishing a few open tournaments will give you an idea of if you really want to join BFL, or Team Trails or something like that.

Excellent advice... I would also say that the Evening tournaments usually offer a novice an opportunity to see what it's like without having to endure a whole day.

Ipretty much got burned out on Tx's a long time ago, but I'll get in a few a year and fish a few of the evening tx's if I'm on to a bite...

BFL co-angler is a good idea as well as joining a club like others have suggested. I fish em all, not for everyone but I LOVE the competition. Nothing like really being on em in a tournament, can be LOTS of fun. Can also be very frustrating and get costly too. Fishers of Men is a good one to start with too. good luck

BFL events are a great way to learn. Please make sure you have plenty of experience with backing in a trailer. And if your not comfortable backing a a trailer down a busy ramp them by all means tell the boater you are not comfortable doing so, most would be happy you let them know. Personally If i were you i would look at fishing some of the smaller team trails there at the REZ and just go out fishing as you normally would do, during the event. Then I would fish the thursday evening events from 5-8 pm that go on every week of the summer. Get a feel for tournament fishing and making decisions. After a year of that I would try and fish one or two BFL events as a co angler, then go from there to a full BFL schedule as a Co for 1-3 years and learn the seasonal patterns of the lakes they fish. I would fish the one BFL on Ross Barnett, but would probably opt not to fish the whole season as you are new to tourney fishing, and my only reason for this is financial. It can get very addictive and very very expensive to fish the BFLs or any trail that requires overnight lodging and food/fuel expenses to get there. Once you see that you want to fish competitively you can learn alot of valuable info from the guys in the BFLs and weekend series as well as guys in clubs in your local area.
Do not let the size of your boat and motor package make you think you cant compete with the guys running 50K dollar rigs, trust me alot of tourney are won from smaller rigs, and those smaller rigs have alot of advantages there on the reservoir.

watch carefully where your boater cast and look for everything that he misses. If he's catching fish then try the same bait in a different color, or some variation that might help. Don't be afraid to try something different completely, like if he's flipping then toss a spinnerbait behind him, or vice versa. You should fish hard, but try and not to get hung up if you can help it. I know we all do it and can't help it, but I've taken guys fishing that stayed in the trees, it gets aggrevating.

BFL seems like a lot to try your 1st year of tournament fishing.. I would look for club tournaments first
