It is a 25 hp limit lake. Conservation gets by there frequently so be ready for an inspection in case they show up! It is a great lake. I don't know about the cold arm being closed or not but there are some big bass in the lake. In my opinion, it fish's just like any other lake. There is grass in the lake which hold good fish..rattletraps early are generally good. Plastics are good as well. The ramp is in excellent condition with plenty of parking. If I had the time, I'd go!

You really need to find out if the plant is running. I have a four hour round trip and I feel like I wasted a lot of time and gas last Thursday when I went. We caught some fish, nothing to justify a drive that far though. From what I understand it's been tough for everybody there since the current is stopped. If the plants running...then you better get over there, great lake. Cold side is closed til 1:00 each day during duck season.

I know this post is a little late if you already made the trip but for future reference you can find out some up to date information at the following site on Newton Lake.

If it's a spontaneous trip, just make sure the plant is running. It's got little or nothing to do with water temp as it does current generated. I've fished it the last few years, sometimes twice a year and sometimes it'll fish tough just like any other lake. All that said with the number/quality fish I've caught from there in addition to staying in Tab's cabins (previously mentioned Sportsman's Lodge) it's a helluva experience. There's a reason it's a 25hp lake - to keep big boats like me and my brother out. Yet we still find ourselves trolling around all day

PM me if you want some fishing tips there, I don't want to take over the thread.

How do you find out if the plant will be runnin that day? I just got a small aluminum rig that im achin to get up there. My buddies at work are on me about when we're goin, but if its gonna be a bust if the plant aint runnin, I think I'll save the gas money and go to Egypt.

I've only fished the lake 3 times. Twice about 20 years ago after it opened and then again a couple of years ago. I stayed at Tab's place and he is a wealth of information on the lake. You could try just calling his lodge, see my previous post, or try posting on his forums and asking your question on his site. I think there are quiet a few guys that hang out over there on his forum and I think they will help you out.

    Good luck

    Re: Newton Lake (LikeToFish)

ive gone when the plant is running and when its not, i dont think it matters, if anything ive done better when the plant isnt running, to me these fish are current oriented, because theyre not pulling current theyre pushing it, im sure it helps some but i dont think its makes or breaks the day, or at least for me it never has
