I am trying to help my buddy change his water pump impeller on his little 25hp evinrude tiller motor. What is the trick to the shifter? I am used to Merc's with having the splined shaft, and don't know much about rudes. Does the shifter rod come out with the lower when it drops? Is it bolted in? I was looking all over the shift linkage on the side and don't see where it drops to the mid section.

That depends on what little 25 HP you have. That's why the moderators always ask for the model number.
The shift linkage is behind an oval plate on the midsection of older modles (thru 84) the plate has two flat screws. After the plate is removed you'll see a brass connector with two screws. Remove the bottom screw.
On newer models (85 & UP) the plastic water pump screens have to be removed, a coupling undone and the plastic keeper and upper nut removed from the shift rod.
Make sure you don't miss the water tube when reinstalling.
Sorry for the lack of info but you were right on the money!!!It must be an 85 or later because it was behind the pick up screen. I can't find any numbers anywhere on it, he sanded it all down and did a make shift job of camo.
