My dad just purchased a boat with a 1984 90hp Evinude motor. And when you try to start it for the first time when unloading the boat, it will start and die several times before it finally keeps running. It seems like it's running on the fuel from the enrichener until it finally fills the carburators with gas and can run off of them. He has to choke it each time he starts it, which is about 10-12 times. We pump up the fuel line bulb tight before we try to start it. I've had other Evinrude motors that would start and die a couple of times, but never this many times. The oil injection has be taken off and an old style fuel pump has been installed in place of the one that mixed the oil and gas. The fuel pump has 5/16" lines coming from it, and I don't think that's too small for a V-4. Once the engine starts and keeps running it will run perfect from idle to full throttle, and starts very easily just as soon as you hit the key.
My opinion of the problem is that it seems when we pump the bulb that it's not filling the carburators with fuel, it's only putting pressure to the fuel pump, and it has to fill the carburators up with fuel for the motor to start.
If I am correct about this, how is the best way to fix it? Or could something else be the problem?
