I have a 2003 18XL with a 150 VMAX. Since installing my GPS I think best I have hit was just over 62. I am running a 25M prop, no jackplate. Boat is always loaded. I also experience some chinewalking at WOT.

I have an 04' 285 with an 04 150 HO (non etec) with a worked 24"
Raker.
In normal Louisiana conditions (90 degree heat and 100% humidity) my boat will run with full gas and gear and 2 people my boat will run 63 - 64 gps everyday all day. With a light load and two people it will run 65 - 66gps constantly. I have never run it with only myself and no gear. I did run it with no gear and 1/2 tank of gas and two people with a 10 mph wind behind me to 67.4 once. I have only had one 18 footer pass me and it was an older Bullet with a 175 hp Mariner. That boat was fast. I did catch it though when we got out of protected water and on the lake with some pretty good waves.
I would like to try a 23 Tempest though. I have heard that is the prop for the 285.

The verdict is in. I picked up my boat on Wednesday with the jack plate but due to bad weather I haven't run it until today. I ran it today with the 23 temptest plus and hit 6200+ rpm and decided I would put the 25M on. Long story short: I turned the 25 m to 5800 rpm at 65.6 by myself with a full tank and loaded to fish a tournament tomorrow.
I'm gonna run a 25 temptest sometime next week.

Sounds like you've about got it set. I'd try the 25 Tempest, but I'd say you're going be real close with what you have.![]()
I don't guess you'll need my help now.![]()

I decided, even before, I tried the temptest to go ahead and raise the motor another 1/2" because I still had somewhere between 23 and 25 psi water pressure. So if all works well, according to Mark, I should pick up another MPH or maybe 2 with the temptest and the raise. I do appreciate your offer to help and if something seems to aray I'll still take you up on it.

The jury is back again. I picked up the 25 temptest yesterday, traded the 23 for it, and ran it yesterday afternoon. With the prop shaft 3.125" below pad, I was able to turn the 25 temptest to 6000 rpm at 66.3 mph. I believe it's time to quit playing with now and fish.
However, I've got rooster tail 6 feet tall behind me at WOT.

Forgot one thing, there is slight blow out when taking off.

When you are running wide open, tap your trim down one time. See if it drops the tail and actually picks up a tenth or so. May not, but with my '06 boat I actually ran fastest between 3/4 and full trim.
Just a thought.

The other thing would be to drop your motor back down an 1/8" or so and see what happens.
Jason Phillips
I beleive I will. I've been plotting for 20 or 30 minutes on how to leave early again today to go play some more. I thought I would actually drop it down 3/8", that would put me at 3.5" below and then gradually come back up if needed.

Sounds good. Just keep in mind that the smallest change could make a huge difference.![]()

Ok, I've been quiet about my set-up for a while now but I've been playing with it a little along the way. I found the sweet spot with the 25Temptest and my best run is at 66.8 mph. I'm not doing anything else because I don't see the point in putting a phase I or II kit on the boat. YET!

That is EXCELLENT numbers for that combo. I wouldn't touch a thing.![]()

Looks like I will need to get a 25 tempest, running 24 now and can get 64 out of a 150 etec HO. good numbers there, I am about 2 3/4 under pad.
Matt
Just for a little more info, I am approx. 2 & 11/16 under pad and those numbers are with a boat loaded with rods and tackle ready to fish a tourny, just over half tank of fuel, livewells somwhere between 1/2 & 3/4 full, and me aat 175 lbs. With two people, ready to fish a club tourny the numbers drop a little to around 64.5 but I don't guess I could ask for anymore out of this combo.
If someone will tell me how, I will some pictures of it.

One other thing, I'm not running my best numbers at full trim.

I have a 2004 285proXL with a 150 VMax. I'm currently running a worked 23P Lighting Prop at 5900 rpm (3 3/8" below pad, 6" manual jackplate) loaded (two guys, full wells, 1/2 tank fuel and tourney gear) . After reading your results I'm interested in changing out props but I don't want to loose the low end performance. How is the bite in rough (3 footers) water? Have you experienced any blow out? What type of hole shot do you have? I'm impressed at your results so any help would be great.
I've had the boat in some rough water and have not experienced any problems or have any complaints with it, It does extremely well. I have experienced some slight blowout but that is when I intentionally am making extremely hard turns; only experienced it twice in the hole shot and have not any problems since. Hole shot is great; not as great as my bullet was, however it shouldn't be. I haven't "timed" my holeshot but would say 2 seconds max.
Oh, BTW, blowout in hard turns is when I'm not driving the boat correctly either. That running wide open basically making the entire boat skip in the turn.
