Re: Etec's still hard to start (CandR)

My 250HO will start just by bumping the starter it seems. Even with a misfiring #1 injector (fixed now), if the engine is spinning good on cranking sequence it isn't the batt. I have 1525 MCA Cabelas AGM, but they say you only need 1000. If it's turning over that fast and that long and you're not smelling gas it's probably fuel related...........wish you the best, would love to hear the out come..........G

Re: Etec's still hard to start (Garfish)

    Frustrating to hear that.

I dunno- I have 800CCA batteries with maybe 12-15' of cable (2 AWG) to the console.

We hooked a bigger battery (only 880CCA, though) with 4' of cable directly to the motor, and it still was tough to start. Still too small??

I think it was the BRP SE Regional rep who stopped in the last time they took the boat to the ramp to try starting the motors. No one has ever mentioned fuel related problems a potential cause, but I have heard just about everything else.

I have some things to try over the next few weeks before draggin back to my mechanic. I may also try swapping in a 1150 CCA battery to see if that has any effect.

I will say, BRP has been very good about replacing anything/everything under warranty to date. I just hope we are almost done with this.

When we do nail this down, I will surely post an update.

Re: Etec's still hard to start (CandR)

Maybe I misunderstood...There is a difference in "hard to start" and slow to turn over. Can you clear that up? Which is it. That engine they say is suppose to make three quick revolutions before it cranks with a strong 1000 CCA battery. If it is spinning quickly and strongly but not firing or popping and you don't smell fuel after several attempts I'd still say check the fuel delivery and rule that out.......

I am guessing that they changed your fuel filter. The ETECs that I have worked on with a hard start problem were because when they pressure tested the fuel system at the factory the filters cracked. I had one that the element in the filter had several broken pieces in it. Take a look at the fuel filter, pump up the ball and see if it fills up. If not it could be a filter problem. If the filter has a black dot on the top it has been replaced from the factory problem.

Re: Etec's still hard to start (Garfish)

    Garfish-

Sorry for any confusion. I would say hard to start, then. Turn key, you can hear it spin, and it sounds like it wants to start, but it dies. Hard to keep the motor "lit". Eventually, I get them started by immediately throttleing up after turning the key. I thought that giving it gas would help, but apparantly it is also pulling down the exhaust gases, which is what I am currently being told is a factor. There is no fuel smell. Hope that helps explain it a little better.

    cheers-

Re: Etec's still hard to start (gitrdone)

    gitrdone-

Motors were rigged my by boat builder, and have been through filter changes already, so I am not sure that is it....although that doesnt discount that someone has already checked into that.

Going to put the boat in the water tomorrow after sitting 2 weeks. We shall see how hard they are to start.....

Re: Etec's still hard to start (CandR)

Ok, so boat sat for two weeks.

Today, took boat to the water - backed trailer down ramp.

Trimmed 1st motor down like I always do (~50%). Turn key, difficult to start. Hmm, same old, same old.

Trim it up (I didn't measure how much, just looked back to make sure prop still under water), turn key, fires right up. Wow, I didnt expect that.

2nd motor- trim it up like the first one- turn key, fires right up. Double wow. Shut it down. Trim it down (~50%), turn key...difficult to start. Hmm, trim it back up, turn key, fires right up.

[When I say they are trimmed down 50%, that is that they are in-line with the hull- ie, if I were sitting flat, in the water, the motors weould be even, not trimmed in or out.]

    What's up with that.

This is one of the first times I have been able to get them to start without turning the key 10+ times. Seems like an "odd" fix/solution. Not exactly complaining, but would like a justifiable explanation that makes sense.

Will have to see over the next few weeks if this "fix" continues to work.
