Couple questions about some wires under the hood of my Fast Strike

I have a 1993 Fast Strike. I am looking to add a cylinder head temperature gauge so i can keep an eye on my motors temps. (Plus i have an old surface temp gauge that is broken and looks like crap so im going to replace it with something more useful). Anyways i am looking for the place to put the sender and i believe i have found it but i found a couple more things that peaked my interest. I wanted to see if the experts could inform me.

    1. What is the wire in the cylinder head with the oval around it on the left side?

    2. The hose with a rectangle around it is for my H2O pressure gauge correct?

    3. The wire in the right cylinder head with an oval and an arrow pointing at it is what i used to verify that my warning horn is functioning but what does that wire actually do?

    4. I am thinking of getting the faria part number 14606 cylinder head temp gauge. Good unit?

    5. Can i thread the sending unit from that gauge into the area with the rectangle around it in the second picture?

    5. Also my speedo has not worked since i got the boat. The man that owned it previously said he disconnected it. I see a hose coming out of the back of the gauge where does it go so i can reconnect it?

    Thanks!

Re: Couple questions about some wires under th ... (daculatruck50)

one is your water pump hose for your pressure gauge( the one with the square plastic elbow), the other is your temprature alarm wires for each cylinder bank. the little plug is just that, it is plugging a port for an old water pressure fitting.

So you can have 2 water pressure gauges if you want one for each cylinder bank?

So if both of those wires are temp senders for each bank then my warning alarm should let me know if things are getting too hot. Correct?

Can i just tie a cylinder head temp gauge into those existing sending units from the factory?

If not where can i thread my new temp sender in?

    Re: (daculatruck50)

you can have two w/p gauges but its not necessary.

the wires are just to power the alarm if your powerhead overheats. they cannot be used to indicate your head temprature.
you will have to find another place to put a temp guage into.

i have the same engine you have but i have never worried about the
hassel of putting a temp guage on it. as long as your w/p and thermostats are working i would not worry about it. what i do is take the head temprature at the ramp after a day of running with an infered temp gun. it tells me all i need to know.

if your engine gets too hot you will know as long as your alarms are working. you can check to see by taking a leader wire and taking the wire that has the stripe on it unplug it and ground the leaderwire to the sending wire with your ignition on and if your alarm works it will sound. do this on both sides to check

Yea. I just have a crappy gauge in there now and i need it gone with no hole. I have a temp gun too but it is a hassle i can pay $30 and 1-2 hrs of my time and i can have a temp gun on it all the time and be able to keep an eye on it incase the almost 20yr old sending units or alarm malfunctions. I dont have 2-3k for a re power.

I am thinking of just going with the teleflex water temp gauge however. I can just unplug the right side that you mentioned and temp the water there. If the powerhead is heating up the water has to too. Correct?

yes that sounds correct if you are using the powerhead water temprature with your sending unit for your guage.

that sending unit may read the temprature of the metal though.

The sending unit for the gauge is designed to go into the hole i have my H2O pressure gauge pickup installed in I saw the exact picture in the instruction manual(A rep. from teleflex sent me the manuel). So if the one on the other side gives the same water it will work correct? It is advertised as a water temp gauge.

In anycase the water gauge would be just as useful as a cylinder head temp gauge correct anything over 170-180 is bad correct head or water. Mine runs 140's 150's from my temp gun.

    Re: (daculatruck50)

i just looked at teleflex's websight about that sending unit. i now might get me one it looks straight foward as to installing it. yes one side will read w/p the other will read water temprature. i like the fact it will just screw into an existing port.

my outboard dosent get over 150 as long as you stay around there you will be fine. if you get to around 180 its getting hot! i was told by SEAHORSE that the thermostats dont work at wot so your engine will probably get warmer but at idle and crusing around your engine shouldent get really over 150.

that engine probably at one time had a temp guage on it that is why it has that port plugged.

as far as your spedo goes. that engine has a spedo pickup tube at the front of your gearcase. the tube comes out the front of the engine up by the steering piviot point you will see it and then it goes up through the piviot tube and comes out under your lower cowling. trace it from there and reconnect it to your spedo. you may need a new spedo tube.

daculatruck you are on the right track,,,,i installed a temp gauge on my 150 intruder a few weeks back and works flawlessly,,,,put some sealing tape on head sending unit and do not overtighten. you will be good to go.

185er Hey i saw you replied to my thread on BBC. I have a couple questions.

    1. What year is your Intruder?
    2. Did you install a cylinder head temp sender or a water temp sender?
    3. Have any pictures under the hood of the motor?
    4. What gauge did you use?
