Is it possible for the float to become saturated with fuel and not cut the fuel off when the bowl is full ?

Yes, usually it will be cracked or have a pinhole in it .
That must be what happened. I left the float out overnight, put carb back togather and no leak.must have dryed out.

If it was saturated, it will prolly do it again. Could have been some trash in the needle seat and when you took it apart, could have cleared out. Either way, good luck on no leaks, keep an eye on it for a few days. JMHO
Think I'll replace all 3 floats, they are original ones, 1988 johnson.
