I have a 1995 200hp Vindicator on a 492v. Top speed is 56mph. Will putting carbs from a 225hp help performance? If so, is it just bolt on and go? Thanks for your help.

Little if any HP gain. They might even be the same carb with different jets so you might be a tad rich. Better wait for the experts to post on this.![]()

I think its in your prop/set up. Those motors build alot of tourge on bottom so you can spin a pretty big prop. A buddy has one on a 195 foxfire charger(heavy sled) and it will run in the upper 60's all day. It also has a 3 sec holeshot. I would put a 25p renagade or a 25p trophy on it and see what it does then.

I am currently using a 25 pitch shooter. I'll start loooking for a trophy or renegade.
I currently do not have a jack plate on the boat so adjustments up or down are difficult. I plan to add a jack plate but am unsure of the right set back. Would there be a huge perfromance difference between a 6" and a 10" setback?
Thanks a bunch for your help.
10" you will probably have to buy new steering and control cables 6" you wont. Rapid Jack would be my choice for a plate if I was going to buy a manual.
I don't know of anyone that likes the shooter prop......JMHO
I almost have the same set up i have a 1993 492v no jackplate with a 1993 200hp johnson gt just rebuild last year and my top end is about the same 58mph.The boat is an aircraft carrier very heavy and the hull is rated for either 235 or 245.I am running a 13 1/4x27 four blade prop and i feel that this speed is about all i will get without spending a alot of money.

What is you wot RPMs? Is your hole shot slow? Prop sounds too much for the load you're carrying. JMHO
A 492 with a 200 you better be running a 23 or a 24 Trophy or a 23 or 24 tempest. That boat is HEAVY for a 200. Will it work yes but I can't see how you are turning a 25 or larger prop in the proper RPM range.
Is it a 492V or a 492VS? If it's the V then maybe a 10" plate. If it's a VS then no more than a 6". If it were me I would try a 23 or a 24 tempest or a 24 fury. Help het that bow up some.

I'm not sure about the 49X series Rangers but the 39X series surely do like a 93 and up 200 with a 25 Tempest and don't let the folks tell you them 391's ain't a lead sled.I've set too many of them up.

Take out some of that tackle Joe and you will see the 70 mark! Move what you can to the rear too.![]()
This is the way this boat was set up when i bought it in 2001.Wot is 5800 when i trim it.Hole shot is fine until i but three people in the boat and a fill both tanks(52 gallons) then i need to get someone up front to get it out of the hole.I always have questioned the small diameter and large pitch but i thought maybe because it was a four blade.
My trophy does that. If you get the chance try a 24 Fury. Take out all the PVS plugs. If it blows out put in one Large plug and try it. They BITE well and carry the bow pretty good.

3 biscut eating bubbas in the back of a 39X ain't gonna cut it, no way. You can't put 750 pounds of dudes a day's snacks, full wells a full load of fuel and all goodies and expect a 200 to drag race!! Just a fact. The 39X is weight sensitive and needs weight towards the rear with a cupped prop to lift the bow. It is a big heavy boat but with the weight distributed smartly the dog will hunt with a good prop. The Tempest Plus works well with this hull and you will need to play with the PVS plugs. Right at 3.5 below pad on a 6" plate is the magic mark.![]()
Three biscuit eating bubbas champioNam that's beautiful i think you were being kind though one of the bubbas is about 350.I know this is a heavy boat the prop is a shooter.I have tried 131/2 x25 renegade it gets out of the hole better but the top end is not there.I don't usually run with three guys usually two.58 mph is fine with me lakes are very small up here and in my state the speed limit is 40mph.This state sucks i hope to get to the carolinasin retirement.
Gentlemen, I really appreciate all of the feedback you are providing. I am kind of a newbie so I am learning. Here's what I think i've gleened from the responses so far.
My 492v Ranger is a lead sled. I agree with that but it really is a smooth ride.
The 200hp Evinrude is really not enough motor for the boat. (rated @ 245hp)
I should add a 10" jack plate. (Rapid jack since I will install a manual)
The 25 pitch Shooter prop I am currently using should be changed to a Fury or a Tempest plus. Either 24 or 25 pitch.
These changes may or may not have a major impact on top speed, but I have them scheduled for this winter.
I do want to refer to the original post. I am a little confused. The serial number on the powerhead is NC00014164 The engine family on the powerhead is X1PXM0183210. The tag says the powerhead is for a 200\225 HP.
If the powerhead is the same for a 200 or a 225, what gets you the extra 25hp? If the powerhead is the same, the extra 25hp comes from something that bolts onto the powerhead. I thought is was the carbs. Please enlighten me.
Bigger carbs and port timing internally. To increase the port timing you would have to dismantle the motor and really know what you are doing by changing the opening size on all the ports on the cylinders. Any time you make modifications to an engines internals you are going to give up reliability. If you want to make these changes then you should send your motor or power head down to Monty Racing and have him do the mods for you. http://WWW.Montyracing.com. Make sure you measure your steering cables before you install the 10" plate as you may have to replace them as well as your control cables.
