what are some signs of a bad cyl?

    1999 Evinrude 150 FICTH:E150FPLEEA

It started and idled fine at the ramp, started off down the river, it started to slow a bit, and loose a bit of power, then it just bogged and stoped, no lights or buzzer, then it was a pain to start, wouldn't stay runnin, then after a bit it would barely idle, if i gave it any gas at all, it would die, so it sat for a few mins, then it started up, but it was running kind of crappy, and it sounded like a had a slight knock, and a bit of a vib to it, so just idled for a bit back up river, then i was able to get going up on plane, but would get it over 3000-3500 RPM's, i can when its not in gear though, thats where i stoped, i put it on the trailer and went home, i have to go buy a comp gauge, but i did pull the plugs to see if any were damaged, none were, but pretty black and the bottom one on the pass side had a lot of carbon build up on it....any ideas?

Do your compress test, do you have a water separator on boat? Had a problem with mine running like crap, and not taking any gas without shutting off, put some additive in fuel, to my suprise it clear it up in about 30 mins had WATER in fuel some how.... That is if the compress test shows OK.

A major sign of a bad cyl. Is when part of the piston is stuck to the spark plug when you take them out. You hold your finger over the plug holes and check for compression also. It wont tell you how much it has but it will tell you if the piston is in tack. It sounds more like bad gas than lost cyl. They usally make lots of racket when that happens.

ya, none of the plugs were damaged, its funny how this happend after the coldest night so far, it was in the high 20's, maybe it had some affect on the gas??

Jeff, when mine went I was headed up river WFO, 5600 rpms. First event was like you pulled the kill lanyard. It just shutdown and washed the rear deck. No noise, no alarms, nothing.

Started right back up, turned around and headed for the ramp. Kept it to 3000 rpms but that only lasted 20 - 30 seconds. Died again but the second time the starter couldn't even turn it over as the piston had seized in the cylinder.

    No alarm that time either.

Spark plug from the bad cylinder was white (lean) compared to the others being brown.

Symptoms don't sound the same as yours so hopefully you have a different issue. Rebuild can get expensive.

Re: what are some signs of a bad cyl? (Stratos268v)

    Jeff.

I had the same symptoms on my 1998 175 Ficht Fast Strike earlier this year.

The motor just slowed down from 5800 to 4500 rpms while on plane, It would rev up to 4000 in neutral but had a miss. When trying to get on plane it would only turn 2500 rpms until the bow broke over, then would only turn 4500 rpms.

After replacing the fuel lift pump, filters and new plugs, it turned out to be one of the #2 injector went bad.

I bought 3 injectors and the Diagnostic software. Replaced the injector ,and no more issues.

BTW... I have sold the motor, and have 2 good used injectors and a laptop computer withe the diagnostic software for sale.

Yep Jeff I hated to be the bearer of bad news. Nothing hurts me more than having to tell someone that their motor has internal issues. I feel bad for you and wish I could help more but the big silver tube with wings was leaving in the AM and I needed to be on it. Great meeting you, your son is a hoot!!
