2005 225Etech / Ranger Z20 Motor Trailer support?
Hi Folks,
I am moving over from a Ranger/Yamaha to a 2005 Ranger Z20/Evinrude setup. The previous owner used to just use the built in trailer/trim lock on the motor.
What is the best recommended device to use for securing the motoring while trailering with 2005 Etech on a z20?

Another vote for motormate.
The flip down trailering bracket has been on Evinrude motors for 20 plus years or so. If they were bad I think they would have removed them by now. I know I started using the flip down trailering bracket somewhere around 2002 and in that time I have pulled thousand of miles with zero issues.
I did too on my 225, but had to have clips to keep engine straight. The bracket on my 250 was damaged so I went with the motor mate.Originally Posted by JR19
Yes I forgot to mention you need steering clips on the hydraulic steering rams to keep the motor straight. You can buy a set or make your own. I use PVC and a dremil and made my own. Actually I made two sets (4 clips) in less than an hour. The clips are not that big and easy to store. In fact they're so small you can stow them in your pocket...try that with a transom saver, lock n stow, motormate or whatever and see how well they fit in your pocket
Where can I buy those steering clips ?
T H Marine but it's cheaper to make your own plus you can cut them to be an exact fit.

Notice the date of that post...2007...I had been using them for years before I ever made that post. I hauled that ol Rude many miles using nothing but the factory flip down bracket and steering clips. My new E-TECH has never seen anything but the factory flip down bracket with steering clips.

Yep, a section of pvc and a hacksaw makes a lot of steering clips for cheap.

What would be about the approximant width of the opening you have to cut out, I don't have a dremil.
Slightly smaller than the width of your steering arm. I slide a piece of cut-off mop handle inside an appropriately cut (for length) piece of pvc—for support—then tighten the whole affair into a vise, then carefully cut longitudinal/lengthwise slots into the pvc, filling to a smooth edge when finished. It’s a little tricky the first time or two you do this, but practice makes perfect, and you’ll have less than a dollar a pair in the resulting steering clips. For length, you want a tiny bit of extra play, so you don’t have to have the motor 100% centered when you install them, but not so much play that the motor pivots with momentum, or it will break your clips. Don’t ask me how I learned this....
