    2000 Evinrude 200hp Ram Ficht Problems

    I'd like to hear from some owners of this motor? How long have you had it and has it every been rebuilt? I just bought this motor and it is a 2000 year model with 270hrs on it. I now this is not very many hrs for a 9yr old motor. Are these engines known for having a lot of problems?

    If it has made it this far it should be a good un just keep the maintenance up.

    I have had mine for two years personally. To my knowledge, it has never been rebuilt and has never had any issues. The problems were originally with the 175hp's. They had trouble with carbon build up due to poor fuel burn problems. This caused extremely short lived powerheads, thats usually why you hear people say "if it's made it past 20-30hrs then it should be ok."

    I didn't have a 200, but had a model year 225 Ficht for 8 years with never a shadow of a problem. Like the others said, while there were some initial setup problems with some Fichts in that year, if they got it right, they got it right. Mine started and ran as good the day I sold it as the day I bought it, and the only wrench that ever touched it was to change spark plugs. -- JC

    I have one now had it for a year. 175 with 10hr on new power head. It has a ecu problem when you first start it it doesn't fire on #5 cyl, and will only turn 4500rpm. You can let it idle all you wont wont fire, slam down on it run a mile or 2 # 5 starts firing and 5500rpm run like that all day. The shop wants $1500 to send it to bombarda to have it repared. With no garente that will fix it. A buddy has a 520 with a 02 225ho on it and 50hr and every time put it in reverse and back in neutral it dies. Thay sed it was ecu problem.

    Just took a 2000 175 Ficht with 562 hrs off my boat this year. Still ran good.Last year had to replace the stator, the bolts backed out sheering them off, that was the only problem I had with it. Other than that it was a good engine for me.

    I have a 2000 175 ficht ram that needs a new power head I don't think I will fix it but I am parting out if anyone wants parts let me know.

    Tell your bud with the 225 HO to change his plugs and see if it runs better.... Be sure to index 'em.

    +1 on the plugs and if he is running anything other than XD100 he may need to decarb.

    I've got that same motor with about 400 hrs on it. I bought it with 250 hrs and it is running fine. A MAJOR issue I've had with it was the fuel line test port schraeder valve insert popped off while running and I had a major fuel leak all over the engine. Luckily it didn't blow up on me. Apparently the E10 in the gas is causing the rubber seals to shrink and wreaking havoc in these motors. Evinrude is aware of the problem and will gladly charge you $250 for the parts to replace the fuel lines. IMHO it should be a recall issue and replaced at their expense.

    A couple of other minor issues that I've had with it; the neutral safety switch tie wrap came off and the motor would stall when going from fwd to rev or visa versa. I didn't know about the tie wrap until I looked carefully at the engine diagram. Once replaced, the shifting was fine. The other issue I have is with the thermostat covers. I guess the previous owner didn't service these and they are stuck on. That's this weekend's project :)

    I change the plugs (and index them), replace the fuel filter, replace the water pump & impeller (2 years) and change the lower unit oil every season. This year I re-rigged the motor cables and tube since the rigging tube was too short and would come off the motor side, allowing water into the tube. I had to replace the main wiring harness from the transom since the wires/connectors were rotted out due to the standing water in the tube.
