Water leak between power head and shaft housing

    Rusty, (or anyone else)
I intalled a new impeller a couple of months ago and everything seemed to be working fine untill last weekend. The water pressure was 8-10 at idle and 30+ at WOT. Then I noticed that the stream from the pee hole was diminishing over time and also noticed water coming out from under the motor cowling pan. I removed the cowling pan yesterday and saw that the gasket between the power head and the shaft housing was leaking a strong steady stream of water at idle. I still have good pressure on the gauge. How is the best way to fix this problem? Does the power head have to be lifted off our can I drop the shaft? Is this a problem that is best left to a pro? Could the increased water pressure from the new impeller have caused this lead. Any help would be appreciated.

Your motor model number would help but more than likely the head comes off and the gasket (mid section to PH) gets replaced. You sure it is coming out of there? Not a leaking pressure relief valve or bad hose? Generally when the PH to Mid section gasket is bad you have a black oily leak down on the sides of the mid section not a loss of H20. The H20 pressure hose is tapped off the head either on the exhuast housing or the cylinder heads, or in some cases T'd in to the telltale hose. CM

Thanks for the help, Yeah, I sure that it is leaking from the gasket. I have examined it pretty good and the gasket material was actually blown out from between the motor head and the shaft housing. Is this something that is unusual? Are we looking at a large repair bill? Is there anything that I could put on it (gasket goop) that would stop the leak? Thanks

as the guys in NASCAR say a $11.00 part cost the race. The head needs to be pulled and the gasket replaced 4-6hr job depending on the wrench and the motor. Figure around $300-$350 bennies.

Thanks for the imput guys. The boat and motor are in the shop as we speak. Unfortunately the tech says that it will be a 2-3 week wait because of the backlog. Bummer!
