Retired Military living in Georgia Question?

Gentlemen, I was wanting to know, how much (% wise) does the state of Georgia with hold from your Military Retirement check?

What would be the Pro's or Con's moving to GA as apposed to AL?

I am moving down that way in the next few months and am trying to educate myself before fnding a new place to live.

I sure hope so. The houses I see in AL do not fit my needs. So I am looking at the Tax side of things

Maybe try GON.com's forums. More Ga folks on there cause its geared to a broader demographic.

Still have no answer. I am trying to see if it would be worth my while to move to the GA side or AL side of Ft. Benning. I do not understand why the state of GA has not repealed the law of taxing Military retirement. It would seem to me that they stand to lose a lot of revenue from all the BRAC people moving down that way and choosing to reside in Alabama because of the GA tax laws.

Rick, you can Google GA IRS and then call the Georgia Dept of Revenue office for the area you're thinking of and they should be able to tell you. I'll be calling them in a few years when I retire and move back. Best of luck.

Well, I came, I saw, I got my *ss kicked. LOL. We could not find anything we liked. The few places in AL we looked at were all being run over by cheap homes being constructed up and down both sides of the road.

So, we are having a new construction built in Harris County. Looks like I will be a Bulldog. WhoooooofffFFF.

Well, Put a bid in on a house in Fortson. Nice neighborhood. Tracks are at least 5+ acres and the place has lots of possabilities.

The state of Ga will tax your military retirement The tax table below will show in detail the Georgia state income tax rates by income tax bracket(s). There are 6 income tax brackets for Georgia.

If your income range is between $0 and $750, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 1%.
If your income range is between $751 and $2,250, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 2%.
If your income range is between $2,251 and $3,750, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 3%.
If your income range is between $3,751 and $5,250, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 4%.
If your income range is between $5,251 and $7,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5%.
If your income range is $7,001 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 6%

    Rick,

Just saw your post this morning, if its not to late I would recommend to retire in Texas. We have no state taxes, great medical for retired personnel in the San Antonio area or other towns near mil bases, or use tricare prime if not near a major military base. Texas also is proactive towards reitred mil people. And we have some damn good lakes to fish on.
Also, FL, NH AK, NV and a couple of other states do not tax military retirement.

Re: Retired Military living in Georgia Question? (reconman)

Recon, I retired from the Army at Knox but I am moving down to Benning due to my DoD job being transfered from Knox to Benning under the BRAC. I would not mind living in Texas but I have another 17 years before I am all together retired for life.

Kentucky does not tax military retirement. Alabama does not either but we could not find a house we liked in Al.
