    08 250HO blown

Well. I’m pretty sure my motor is done. I put the boat in the water idled back in the back of the cove to fish some grass while I waited on my buddy to get there. He called 15 minutes later. I idled back to get him. Idled out of the no wake zone. Planed our and tan for about two miles at roughly 5000 rpms. T I started slowly loosing power. The motor finally shut down. I idled all the way back to the ramp. Came home and pulled the plugs and this is what I found.

The motor has roughly 300 hours on it. It’s an 08 250HO E250DHLSCS.

I had the injectors cleaned about 40 hours ago and replaced injector #4 with a new one. Replaced the fuel pump. Replaced all the fuel lines. New VST filter. Cleaned out the gas tank. Did everything I thought I was supposed to do. Used XD50. Ran 100% 87 octane gas. I checked the diagnostics and there are no codes showing and the last time a code was shown it said something like engine not up to temperature.

What hat are my options? What do you think caused it?

wow,are you the original owner?just wondering if you are the second owner how the first owner treated this engine.our club president has the same engine, same year, has had zero problems out of his.his engine has close to 450 hours.no way that engine should have let go at 300 hours.good luck to you
    keep working,your neighbor thanks you

I would start by using a scope to visually check the cyl wall and piston, then compression or leak down test to try to figure out how bad it really is. Best of luck!

I agree with the scope. I’m guessing by the fact that it won’t turn over that it’s going to be pretty bad.

I pulled it from number 6 if I remember how to count them correctly. Port bottom.

Pull the head off and have a look. Yep #6 is bottom port. Who did your injector cleaning for you?

I had them cleaned by injectorman back in May. He told me that #4 was bad so I replaced #4 with a new injector. He was awesome to work with. I have the diagnostic software and programmed the emm for the new injector .dat file. While the injectors were being cleaned I took that tank out of the boat and cleaned it out. I replaced the fuel line and bulb with yellow ended ball and new fuel line. I replaced the fuel pump. I replaced the VST return filter. I replaced the fuel filter. I run XD-50 with 100% gas. I think I've got roughly 50 hours on the motor since the injectors were cleaned.

I'm going to pull the head tonight and see what I find.

I think its just bad luck.

Small correction. I went back and checked again this afternoon and its only been 34 hours since I had the injectors cleaned. I've currently got 289 hours on the motor. I have 2 historical fault at 288 hours that said engine operating temperature not reached on both the port and starboard side. I had the injectors cleaned at 255 hours. #4 was stuck open and I recorded a fault for that I also had #6 stuck open at 213 which had occured at 213 hours and occured 16 times. This was before I purchased the boat. I'm pretty sure that the previous owner had mentioned to me that he replaced one of the injectors I assume that it must have been number 6 that was replaced. The historical faults also showed an injector #4 stuck open at 95 hours and occured 7 times. I know the previous owner purchased the motor used and I think this was probably before he bought it. I had an engine temperature aboce range at 279 hours. This happened because I got into a bunch of grass. I immediately shut the motor down when I heard the alarm and pulled some grass out of one of the intakes. Maybe this caused part of the problem. Oil pressure feedback not detected occured at 244 hours which was possibly me but I'm not positive. I did have the boat out once and the oil light came on.

Just a thought...aren't all HO engines recommended to use XD100, I also have an 08 250 HOinstalled 12/07 and have had all the injectors replaced, 5 at one time under warranty way back in 09, so far 420 + hrs and no mechanical problems. I now run ethanol free gas but from day one have used XD100 and double filter/ water separate my fuel with Moeller manifold and filter with sight glass bottom and add 16 oz of Seafoam to every 16 gal of fuel. I believe keeping all trash out of the fuel is key to 2 stroke EFI engines.

Really, happens to Mercs as well. I guess every time a Merc pops we need to go and post on the Merc forum we are going to OMC/BRP.

Make sure the root cause was not the boat because if so he new engine no matter what colour it is may well also "blow".

I 100% agree with finding the root cause.

I hope I don't jinx myself by telling this.i have a 2009 etec 150ho that has close to 400 hours.since day one I have always used seafoam in the fuel.i don't overdue it but at least every other tank full I will add 1 bottle of seafoam.the only fuel I have used is 87 octane ethanol blended(just because ethanol blended is all they had)and I have always used Pennzoil syn.blend oil.so far I guess I have been the lucky one because I have had zero problems.but I have also been told by etec service techs that the 150ho engine is by far the most reliable and trouble free engine of all the etecs.

Looks like to me you leaned out an injector and it burned up the piston. Those things have some incredibly high exhaust temps.
