Retired Military living in Alabama Question?

Gentlemen, I was wanting to know what are the Pro's or Con's moving to AL as apposed to GA , besides the taxing of military retiement checks?

I am moving down that way in the next few months and am trying to educate myself before fnding a new place to live.

I have a friend who is a retired Army officer that lives near Huntsville. I believe told me that Alabama does NOT tax military retirement. Look here - http://www.cga.ct.gov/2005/rpt/2005-R-0131.htm

Doc, Read the attached link you provided. Great info and thanks. I know the state of AL does not Tax military retirement. I was wanting to know what other Pro's and Con's there were for AL.

Was raised in Ala but have lived in Ga for 36 years. Fishing is MUCH better in Ala (Guntersville, Wheeler, Pickwick, Logan Martin, Lay, Mitchell, etc etc. BUT that is the only advantage Ala has IMO. I would choose North Ga.

OK, sorry I mis-read your post, Sarge. Since I am retiring to a home we own up by Lake Guntersville, here's my list of why I bought property there. All comparisons are to Wichita, KS where I lived & worked for the last 30 years.

Pros: LOW property taxes (less than 1/6 of what we pay in KS for an equivalent home), decent secondary roads, friendly people, pleasant weather, lots of great fishing and plenty of boat ramps, especially on Guntersville. No property tax on the boat - this is a BIGGIE after living in KS.

Cons: high sales tax, food is more expensve, and the humidity is tough on an old fat guy.

Unlike flyingwillie, I've never lived in Georgia so I can't comment on it.

Doc, I was not aware of the no property tax on the boat. Absolutly a BIGGIE.

As far as the high sales tax goes, I thought it was only 4% in AL? Food will be bought at the comassarry and would think the humidity wouldbe the same. Even for a middle-aged fat guy.

flyingwillie, I am looing for something around the Ft. Benning area as my job is moving down there. I think Northern Ga would be to long of a drive.

Guess state sales tax is only 4%, but county and everbody else adds on - it's 9% where I live in Jackson County. Boat registration is $26/year and no trailer registration.

    Rick,
Live across the river on the Alabama side and drive to work on the Ga side. Phenix city is a bad choice, but Eufaula, Al is not to far of a drive. And still get the bennies of living in Alabama.

I would consider living in the Auburn/Opelika area if I were working at Ft. Benning. That is a really nice area and a great place to live. (funny to hear from an Alabama grad, I'm sure)

Re: Retired Military living in Alabama Question? (notime4fishin)

I would look at the Smiths Station area. Close to Ft. Benning, good schools nice housing.A lot of military both active and retired live in the area. New housing is being built in all the areas around Ft. Benning to accomadate the influx of the incoming personnel. You and your family will have alot of choices to choose from. But as I said earlier it would be the Smiths Station area for me. Having lived here since I retired in 1988. I can fish any number of lakes in a matter of just a few minutes to a couple of hours. I don,t hunt but there is good hunting to be had in this area. There are bowling centers, skating rinks, parks, museums, restaurants all within easy driving of the area.I was talking with one of the coaches at Smith Station recently and he said he and Coach Rose was scheduled to be at Ft.Knox to particpate in some type of meet and greet and info seminar with the other communties in the area. I don,t recall the date . If you want or need any more info just email me and I will give you my phone number and you can call me.
