Rough idle after timing adjustment - 1995 Johnson Fast Strike 150

My motor would stall after the morning run, a period of fishing and then asking it to take me to another spot. It would start and idle readily, but then die or run poorly then die after I gave it some gas. I found the intructions on here http://www.bbcboards.net...80062
to advance the timing and it worked! However, it idles more roughly. Should I try to adjust the roller back in the other direction a little to find a happy medium? Can I do this on the hose?

BTW, I had to adjust both the Spark Cam Roller and the Spark lever to get it to look like this:

    Thanks in advance.

    John

Is it possible that after your adjustment your
idle rpms are to low? There is a couple more
steps to a complete sync&linc. Make sure throttle
plates are completely closed at idle, idle rpm should
be at (I think) 500-700 rpm in gear. Move spark
advance and idle timing detents acordingly " then"
adjust roller to touch arm.T he very instant you start
to throttle up, the throttle plates and timing advance should
move at the exact same time. I could probbily explain it
a little better but, I've been up since 4:30am and I have
just recently had a coulpe coctails.

Sounds like you are advancing spark at the idle position. Set the arm back where it was and set the roller as posted earlier. The arm should start to move with the movement of the throttle plates.

Also make sure the roller for the throttle plates has not failed prior to adj. The outer rubber will crack and fall off reducing WOT and making the timing adjustment incorrect.

If I could see the timing pointers I could tell better if you also take a shot of the timing arm where is touches the throttle roller this would help too. But as suggested try backing off the roller setting just a tad.
