did I get hosed?

took my 07 x2 with a 250 in to be worked on. ran up on a sand bar and scratched my prop up pretty good.no chips or dents but had a lot of vibration.limped back in and took it in for repairs.
this is my first boat so bare with me on this.mechanic said it would be 300$ to fix the prop.but that I had the wrong prop on the motor. its a 27 tempest. said he called and talked to Mercury who recommended a 26 fury.600$
said I had the wrong prop for that motor and the boat would be unstable and dangerous. I went with
the 26 fury brand new. went out yesterday and now the boat tops out at 68 at 6200 rpm.wot.
with the 27 I could hit 74 with a lot of throttle left. then the walk would hit.(still learning to drive through that)burned up a half tank with the 26. the boat just feels way under powered now.

2007 Triton 20x2 250 pro xs. hydraulic jack plate set to about 3 1/4 . all gps speeds.
Am I stuck with this prop now? feel like I was sold the wrong one. ?

I HAVE A 08 Triton with same set up.Had a 25 tempess plus on it and it wouldnt do over 69 to 72 on a good day.I had lower rpms around 5200 to 5400 and didnt ever burn hardly any fuel.Now im running a 25 fury and its picked up the rpms alot,sounds like a chain saw now and rpms are around 5600 to 5900 on a good day.My boat runs and handles alot better with the fury prop setting at 4-1/2 below pad from the Triton factory.But now it does burn alot more fuel.
paste this link to the Triton Board for more info. I like the 25 props just for over all proformance,hole shot,mid range and top end.If i can run around 72 with the x2 hull Im happy.With that HYD.Plate on your boat you can dail it in pretty good at least.props and plate settings will get you maybe 2 to 4 miles per hour give or take.

Ps: a board Sponser on BBC was selling props for around $450 I think ?,in the top pined threads in the prop section.

Not sure what motor you have Standard Opti vs. ProXS but 6,200RPM is too fast either way.

Figure 200 rpm less for each inch of pitch increase.

I would take it back and see if they will exchange the 26 for a 27 considering you are overreving the motor now.

FWIW my 07' x2 came from the factory with a Tempest Plus and its fine

I've had 2 tritons and have ran 27 trophy and 27 tempest on both.you should have stayed with the 27 tempest are switched to a 26 fury

Yes, you got hosed. If your mechanic made the statement that you had to change props because you had the wrong one...then I'd go find another mechanic. I'd go back and give him the prop back expecting a full refund. $300 to fix a prop is also outrageous...although I'm in the Southeast so my pricing may be alot lower. But, typically a prop repair from Mark Croxton (Board Sponsor) wouldn't run over $150.

In the end, I don't see how the 27 Tempest is going to make your boat unstable and dangerous. You may not run at the optimum RPM range, but unstable and dangerous???? Sounds like you are dealing with someone that was looking for a sucker to walk in.

Midwestern states would charge around $150 to fix a prop. $300 is nuts.

My son, reelsore on here, has the exact same boat / motor combo as you. He is running a worked 27 tempest and hitting 78MPH GPS by himself and 74-75 with a partner and not on the limiter. (he's right at 6000 rpms which is what the pro XS is rated for) He has tried the fury and did not like it at all. Sold it and bought a new out of the box 27 Tempest and he liked it except had too much bow lift so he gave me that prop. It runs great on my boat, by the way. He's now wanting to try a 29 tempest to see how it performs.

On that year X2 you need to run the motor lower than you would on most Tritons. He is running his motor 4" below the pad and his boat has little to no chine even at 78MPH! If I run my motor that low, my boat is uncontrollable. Different hulls require different set ups.

If someone told you the boat is uncontrollable with the 27 tempest, I'd have to question their knowledge on boat set ups. Sounds to me like he wanted to sell you a prop. I would recommend you get your 27 tempest back and set your motor at 4" below the pad and I believe you will be pretty close to optimum performance with that hull/motor combo. It may need some minor tweeking from there but it will be pretty close if not perfect.

300 bucks to repair a scratched up prop is high, actually that's very high. Next time you need prop work, suggest contacting Mark Croxton who is a BBC sponsor and you will find his prices considerably better, I believe. And his workmanship can not be beat. In my opinion, all you need to do is have mark balance and blueprint the 27 you have and set your motor at 4" below the pad, and your problems will be solved. That will be much cheaper that buying a prop you don't need.

You did not get treated fairly imo.
My partner ran the same boat/engine and we saw 71-72 with a 26 Tempest. Tried a Fury with no real gains so he stayed with the Tempest.
Prop repair should have been less than $200 but everything is higher out there too.
I would get back with them and give them the prop back and ask for a full refund. You bought on his recommendation and he was wrong.

Agreed. I got stuck last spring and turned a Tempest + into a saw blade. $150 bucks and 5 days later, it looked brand new again.

I agree with Chopper. The X2 hulls like the motor run deeper + the Fury likes it deeper still. I tested my 25 Fury from 4.5 below pad all the way up to 3.5 and 4" BP was the sweet spot. I have a 26 Tempest+ that runs the same as the 25 Fury which is common. I plan on sending my 26 Temp+ to Mark and have him change the pitch to a 27. Just wondering what size jackplate you have? You said you got a hydraulic but not the set back. If you don't know, go out and measure from the transom to the motor. I agree with everyone else here, you need to return that prop and get yours worked by Mark.

I believe its an 10inch jack plate.taking it back to him on friday and he is replacing the prop to a fury 27.then ill take it for a run.he told me he would make it right.he's got once chance with me.going to send off my old prop anyway and have it fixed for a spare.thanks for all the help guys.

When you go to a Fury from a Tempest+ you have to DROP one pitch because the Fury is a stiffer prop. If you don't like the 26 Fury, you will hate the 27 Fury. You need what you had, the 27 TEMP+

Dude, send your prop to Tru-Pitch in Sacramento or Phil's Props in Redding. I guarentee you even with shipping it won't be $300 to fix up some scratches. If you send it to Phil's, send along some performance numbers and they will balance and blueprint for your application. That might add a little to the cost but I bet it would still be under $300. Also on the price of the Fury, I believe $600 is MSRP. A dealer will charge you that but there are better deals out there. I just bought a brand new one from Jaco's Marine for $469 with no tax and free shipping.

No, the 4" I'm talking about is measured from the C/L of the prop shaft to the bottom of the pad. My son has a manual plate but that don't matter. Your hydraulic plate will make it a lot eaiser, that's all. 4" is still 4". I believe your chine walking will be much improved at 4", or at least his was much better. I am not too far from you.
