    Evinrude 150 wont stop

Was fishing fine and started motor many times. The last time It didnt crank right away but something kept running. Sound like a humming sound. Kill switch didnt stop it, only way to stop it was to unhook the battery. Checked the ignition switch and unplugged the red cable and still the engine would attempt to start if i touched the wires to the battery. Finally after using the trolling motor to get back to the ramp, I took off the red cable from the starter. then I was able to put the wires back on the battery so I could trim the motor. I put the red wire back on the starter and it stopped. I have put a new starter on the engine. this was the first time out. I had started the boat 5 times earlier in the day with no issues. Any ideas??

Sounds to me like the solenoid is stuck.

Sorry. I am not sure of the model number. I cant find it anywhere on the motor. The motor is a 1988 Evinrude XP150 oil injection has been unhooked for years. mix gas and oil manually. Took a quick look at the solenoid and it looks fairly new. I bought the boat about 2 months ago, so I am unsure how old it is.

Sounds like the bendix is hung up in the starter. A good alternator shop can fix you up.

this is a brand new starter. First time to the lake with it. Would the Bendix stick on a new starter?

You didn't mention the new starter in either of your posts that is why it was suggested. Replace the solenoid.

No not the one with the red lever!!!
The solenoid we are talking about is mounted to the bottom of the starter.

Better replace the rubber ring around the starter solenoid also.
