    How to remove lower unit


    40 h.p. evenrude mod.# E40ELCO Ser.# G1009555 can anyone tell me how to drop the lower unit ? It will come down about 1" then it will stop. I put it in rev. dropped a bit more but still will not come off.

    Did you disconnect the shift rod?

    Where do you disconnect it at ? I can not find any way at the lower unit. Never did a omc. merc. and yamaha just drop down.

    There is a little screw below the carburetors that you will have to remove in order to get the LU off.
    Burning the candle at both ends.

    Remove the port side belly pan it will make your life easier.

    Sometimes it's a lot easier just to remove the starter for easy access to the screw.

    If I did that I might not have been able to put it back together. I'm great at tearing chit apart, it's the putting it back together that gets me.

    Thanks for the help on the lower unit guys. I had to remove the starter to get to the bolt, what a b****!
