jackplate. that way you can go ahead and get the height right and ready for the prop. props will change with setup and jackplate changes. so i would buy the plate, then the prop.

thanks guys. One other part of the question should have been what does more setback give you? i know the jackplate allows you to run the motor at optimum height and run cleaner water ...but is there an advantage to having a larger set back, say 10" versus a 6"

the boat is a 285 pro xl....i've just noticed that there are different "set backs" with the different jack plates...was wondering what the advantage is of having a larger setback

The six inch plate will do just fine for a 285. The jack plate is all about giving you bow lift and getting that nose in the air some. On bigger boats you might have to go back to 8 inches to the the best bow lift. It also helps handleing a lot with the added bow lift.
