    Legal?

Is it legal to repower a 275 with a 150? What speed should I get?
By the way 275 xl is a great boat!
    Thanks

    Re: Legal? (achigan)

dont know about Canada where you are but here the coast guard is a recommended HP thing. you can if you want put a 500 hp motor on the back of a 17' boat, now you would not be allowed in contests or tourneys and you will NOT repeat NOT be able to get any kind of insurance, you will need lots of money to to self insure in case anything happens and you lose control of the boat.
as for speed, it all depends on load distrubition and such, but the general rule of thumb is 25 Hp = 5 MPH now if you are thinking of buying a new 275 If not mistaken they are a package deal and the dealer may or may not put a bigger engine on it, also he may not sell it as to a liability issue if you get hurt or the boat falls apart remember a 125 is what the boat is rated for , transom and such , and a 150 is heavier. in my never to be humble opinion spend the extra bucks and get the boat rated for the motor you want and dont skimp, you hurt yourself, others and and destroy a perfectly good boat.

RIGHT! Besides being liable for any material damage, whether the motor power was a factor OR NOT, if there is personal injury involved then you are really screwed. A court may award damages so severe as to result in the loss of your home, vehicles, savings, and even your wages can be attached to settle a debt. At the very best, you might only lose a boat that you still owe payments on but you will then be on shore duty for a lonnnnnngggggg time, if not forever.
Self-insuring is even higher on the Stupid Scale than financing a car or boat without sufficient down payment to offset depreciation or financing for a long term without an even larger down payment.
Follow the HP recommendation on the boat!

ok thanks, I was just wandering cause there s a magnum package and the 275 gets a 150 so I thought the transom would be ok, do they change the rating just for the package and then get back to a 130 max?

I had a boat that was overpowered and insured. Never gave me any trouble, and when I totaled it, they paid up, no questions asked.

If I had or was gonna buy a 275, I would get a Yammie 130, and let Hydrotec massage it a little. They could probably get 150 out of it easy.

    Re: Legal? (Lockjaw)

The Magnum package lets the manufacturer rate the boat at 150 HP so it is legal. It also adds a dual cable steering, jackplate and hotfoot. Same exact hull just setup at factory for a few more ponies. it all about being safe also.

    Re: Legal? (lkhartwl)

The Magnum option is no longer available. I have a freind who bought one and it is legit. 275 Magnum rated 150 HP insted of 130 also has a jackplate and hotfoot I beiieve it has dual cable steering or Hydralic but i'm sure the sterring is different than a 275 Pro XL

I think they also had a magnum option on another model also.

Also how is your motor running trying to IM you but its not working.

hey Dad the thread you mentionedsaid nothing about a 275 it was about a 2005 285 xl mag. and if I remember correctly the Jav 389 and stratos 285 in the mid 1990's had each a rating of 175 hp ( I had a Jav 389 that is why I know) they dropped the rating when omc went kaboom and genmar took over

as for MY motor looks like I need a 28p prop had it out this weekend and she even with a 27 tempest still wants to run over 6000 rpms 74.5 gps with me alone . 69.8 with me ( 280) and a guy (260) gps. so she runs well. but then she is kept up buy the Guru himself Championman if I hear a weird sound I am on the phone or dragging her over to him. she is for sale tho but no one wants her

    Re: Legal? (StratosDadRI)

I thought those ratings were the starting point, not the max.

If you add the 1 hp of the trolling motor to all of us who are maxxed out we are all overpowerd

    Re: Legal? (StratosDadRI)

I already have a hot foot and a jack plate + 115 e tec , I absolutely love the boat, very stable; and when I have my foot on the trolling motor pedal I don t care if I have 16 feet of boat behind me or 20! I think it would be awesome with a 150 HO may be in two years...
Thanks again for your comments guys!
