    Renegade 20

I'm thinking about trading up to an R20 DC of the same year model. My question is; Is there room to store 7' rods in the rod locker or does the dual console take up rod space? I've got room in the Single console 18 footer for them, I don't want to give up anything during the upgrade. Also, what kind of speed should I expect out of the 225HO on this boat?
Another thing is, is 2 ft and 75 more HP worth a 5K difference.

I dont think you will be giving up a thing going to a bigger boat, except maybe at the fuel pump. Dont know how similar they are but i had to go from a jav 400 to a r18, wish i had the big boat back. If the r20 is in as good or better shape than your r18 I would seriously persue it.

The only thing I am really concerned about is that dual console taking up rod locker space that I have now. Plus, I have only seen pic's of the R20 so right now I'm not sure about the condition. and thanks for your input.

The bigger boat will undoubtably have more storage space even though it is a d/c.
It will also ride and handle the rough stuff worlds better than the r18. Speed should be in the mid 70's .

Get ready to open your wallet at the gas pump though. My 150 makes gas compared to my old Venom 200.

    Re: Renegade 20 (Lockjaw)

Anyone got a good Idea on mpg with that thing, what about tank size? I know tank size wont save money but w/ decreased gas mileage fuel capacity will be an issue.
And thanks for the tips so far...

    Re: Renegade 20 (emawyer)

I can get 6'6 foot rods easily in my dc 18 (really its 17'8" I believe) venom 18. So I would think that a r20 would easily fit 7' rods. Why not just take one of the rods with you before buying and make sure?

    Re: Renegade 20 (cubswin)

Oh, I definitely will take rods w/me before buying. I'm just trying to get good info before I get to excited about the possibility of getting it. I think the DC renegade 18 has rod locker in the middle because the dual console makes the left side too short for a rod locker. Just wanted to male sure the 2 ft didn't all end up in the back deck, or for legroom.

    Re: Renegade 20 (emawyer)

I've got a Renegade 20 and I have no problem getting 7' and even a few 7'6" rods in the box.
The Renegade 20 runs fast and handles rough water extremely well. I've never had a regret about mine. I know from personal experience that a new Triton TR-20, Ranger Z19 and/or Z20 don't match the overall performance of a Renegade 20 with equal horses on the back. The biggest performance advantages you'll see from the R20 is it's turning ability at high speed and rough water handling ability. You will find that it does have a slightly smaller front deck compared to the others but I'm not willing to go spend $25,000+ to get a slightly newer boat that has a wider deck and doesn't handle as well.

In my opinion, a used Renegade 20 in good shape is one of the best values out there.

    Just my 2 cents!

    I forgot this....
If your R20 and 225 HO is set up right, you will see low 70's with you and a buddy and mid 70's with just you.

    Good luck!

    Re: Renegade 20 (TxAgs97)

There is a reason why Stratos kept the hull in their line up...yes that exact hull is now under the Stratos 200 pro XL. The hull started out as a Javelin 400 or 409 then was renamed Renegade 20 when Javelin updated/changed their line up. Then when Genmar took over Javelin and Stratos they phased out the Javelin line up but was smart enough to keep that hull around as the Stratos 200 pro xl. The 201 pro has been the flagship ride for many years at Stratos but one could easily argue that the 200 pro xl is a better hull. Don't get me wrong the 201 is a great ride and I have fished many hours out of a 201 but my opinion (for what its worth) is that you will have the combination of a good rough water ride and great top end speed in the R20 but the 201 is right there with it. I have never owned a Javelin or Stratos with that hull but I have seen many of them around and know a couple of owners and they all like that hull. I have a spare 7ft rod in my drivers side locker on my R19. It is a tight fit but I would think in a R20 it would fit more easily.

    Re: Renegade 20 (emawyer)

Take your 7 footer and lay it on the deck in front of the console(s), and you'll see how far up into the bow the rod will run. You'll get an extra inch or two down in the locker, but that's about it. They'll definitely fit, but the rod tip will be laying along the curve of the bow. I installed a home-made rod organizer in my 200DC using some plywood and golf club tubes. Keeps the tips from tangling, but it puts a bend in all the rods and makes getting them in and out rather tricky...especially the longer sticks. I'm considering going back to rod socks.

    Re: Renegade 20 (emawyer)

I have the renegade 20 dc with the 225 ho johnson. It has plenty of room for the 7 foot rods to go in the rod locker. It has a 50 gallon gas tank. Fastest I've seen is 77 mph. 72-74 tourney loaded. It's not the best on gas nor is it the worst. Mine doesn't chinewalk a bit even at wot. Its a smooth ride. I won't buy another boat for awhile. I love my jav.

Thanks Mike, That's all good info. I love my R18. Just like to have a larger one. Have you every had any issues w/the 225HO. What is your current set up? Jackplate and prop?

    Re: Renegade 20 (emawyer)

No problem Ed. The 225HO is a great motor. I have alittle problem sometimes cold starting it. It still takes a couple of cranks to get it going but once started its turn key from then on. I had a issue with a plug getting junked up with carbon but I was using the wrong oil. Since then I have not had one problem with the motor. It is a strong running motor. I would say on a average I get 2.5 mpg, but I keep it wide open all the time.
My current set up, prop from pad I haven't measured. But I have a 5" hi-jacker that I could jack up some to get alittle better speed, but then I'll probably experience some walking so I have left it alone for now. It came with a 25 gade which I run most of the time. I also bought a 24 raker I have been running. It gives me a better holeshot and with a lighter load better speed. The gade I run is faster tourney loaded.
The tm is a evinrude which I hated when I got the boat and planned on getting a new one, but I have come to love that tm. Its quiet and powerful. I think I'll keep it until it breaks. Overall this boat and motor combo is great. I wanted alittle more room up front when I was looking for a boat but once I started fishing from it, it had plenty of room. I'm 6'3" 310 and I have plenty of room. I usually carry 5 rods on deck and still have room to move around.
I love the dual console. It might take up more room for others, but I can store my wallet, keys, pliers, etc. in the glove box and its easy access. Plus I leave the net underneath the console so its not in the way or taking up room in the rod box. Plus it good for the old lady to hide behind. She'll enjoy it even more when it gets 30 degrees outside and we'll running 20 miles down the river.
Do you ever fish the nottoway river? I live 5 minutes from the ramp on 258 so if you're ever down this way look me up.

    He's looking at a '99. It will be the Johnson 225 H.O. carb'd motor.

    Re: Renegade 20 (1niceStratos)

Ahhh thanks, I had a 99 with that motor ran great was fast, but thirsty......

BUT it was better than my 19 renegade with the 175...had higher cruising speed and probably a 1/4 fuel savings over the smaller rig.

Put 7 footers in the lockers all the time, removed the rod tubes and used the bass pro rod socks instead they worked much better in that boat the rod tubes got the tips hung up ALL THE TIME.

you wont be sorry moving up in size ...Boat or Engine...and the 99 Johnson was a brut compared to the 2000 model year engine

Thanks Ya'll, I appreciate all the advice. That model boat/and or Hull design and engine combo will stay on my wish list. Don't think the dealership and I are going to agree on #'s.
