    Putting a 150 on a 201

Has any one ran a 201 with a 150 on the back? With the gas prices and the prices of the big engines I was wondering if it would be ok and what kind of speed it might run.

I can't comment on the speed of it, but I would think with a 150 you would have to stay in the throttle so much you would offset any gas savings.

speed low to mid 50's wot since a 201 is a pretty heavy boat and especially if an older one. you will not save any on gas unless you go e-tech and then as said before you will need to stand on it all the time to even get on plane decently.

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (lkhartwl)

I was thinking that I ran my 200 at 4400 rpm most of the time and that a 150 would weigh less,a big help when flipping shallow, and that I do not get in many boat races on the lakes that I fish tournaments. plus, if I needed to make one of those long 100 mile runs to win a big event , the 150 would burn less gas. the 201 seems to stay on pad once you get a little air lift under it, just an idea

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (red dog)

They used to run them when BASS had a 150 HP limit. Guess they did OK. Like others say, it will be pretty hard on the motor having to run more RPMs all the time. A guy in my club has a 21 ft Hawk with a 175, it runs good enough to get the job done. Not sure of his top speed.

Might be better off getting a direct injection motor. Looking at Yamahas performance bulletins during some research on a new boat, a 225 HPDI on a 20 fter gets pretty close to the same MPG I get with my carburated 150 on a 18 ft boat not to mention more speed.

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (Neilslure)

Thanks for the info, I was thinking about a hydro tec phase 2 150, a 150 hpdi or even a four stroke on my old battlebarge. I fish alot more than I run so it just got me to thinking. do you think the weight difference would help? A buddy of mine had a 295 with a 150 omc and it ran with all the other 150's ,it was rated for a 200. He put a 200 on it,its a rocket, but he can not get way up shallow anymore

I had a 150 on the back of a 201 and it was underpowerd. Don't do it. You need a min of 200. Best thing to do is go with max power. You can always back off throttle.

Get a Mercury Optimax 225, a friend has one on his Triton & it uses less gas than my 285XL w/ a 150! And he fishes the Currituck Sound which is a huge shallow flat, so I don't think shallow water ablity will be affected

The Opti's do get great mileage. I have a 225 pro xs and I think it has a refinery hidden in it somewhere. It almost never needs gas and I run fairly hard.

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (landar)

I used to fish out of a friend of mine's 201 that had a 150 johnson fast strike on the back. I think it was a 96 model. That boat done just fine with the 150 on it. Hole shot was good, it wasn't fast, but it was fast enough. My friend still swears that was the best driving, handling, and fishing boat he's ever had and a lot of times he wishes he had it back. There used to be a lot of 201's powered by 150's back when BASS had the 150 hp limit in place. I'm not saying it would be a good idea to underpower one, but it could be done and the boat would still do fine. Whether or not it would save any fuel over backing off the throttle of a bigger motor is the question and I don't have a clue about that. I do know the 201 I fished from with the 150 done really good on gas for a carbed engine. Better than most others I've been around.

    A new 201 with a 150 H.O. E-TEC would not be a bad combination at all.

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (1niceStratos)

I think the most important thing is to get the boat running in the most economical range for the engine, and have that speed be enough where you can stand to drive the boat.

I would have concerns about the boat being underpowered. If you had to put a smaller pitch prop on it to get it to perform, then you have to wind the snot out of it when you are hammer down, and truth is, there are times when you need to hot foot it somewhere, like when a storm sneaks up on you. Winding the snot out of it is going to hurt gas mileage.

Opti's get awesome mileage, my bud has one, and I would recommend one wholeheartedly to you. I think a 150 on a boat probably rated for a 225 is a little on the low side of the power curve.

DON'T DO IT! I have a friend with a mid '90's 201 with a Johnson 150. His partner has to move to the front deck to get on plane, then he gets passed by all the fish 'n ski's on the way up the lake. The last two tournaments, he just circled back into the marina to avoid embarrassment. If he ever came in with full livewells, I would assume it would be at idle speed.

    Re: Putting a 150 on a 201 (utfisherman)

The hull weight is only about 100 pounds more than a 295 and they ran good ,64mph, with a 150. I was thinking that the only differnce would be getting that last 5-7 mph out of the top end. thanks for the feedback guys. It looked like I need to go big or go home if I am going to keep the 201.
