I'd probably go with a 6" plate. Now the thing is do you want manual plate (cheaper) or hydraulic (cost more). There are usually some good deals on them in the up page at the bottom on main page. I bought a new manual from Vance manufacturing for cheap. Put it on and it made a world of difference.

i understand about the hyd./manual difference and i of course would prefer hyd (price permitting lol) 2 questions,,, do they bolt up to my existing motor bolts? and does more "setback" cause more transom/jackplate stress and make the boat more "back heavy" ?

Yes it would bolt up in the same holes.
Yes more set back creates more stress
and yes it makes the boat set lower in the water

You need to very sure your transom is in good shape.
Jack plates create a bit more stress.

If your worried about the transom might get that checked out or fixed first before you buy a jp.

once you know your transom is good, try a 6" like the guys suggested and get a couple of Bob's 2" spacers if you want to go a bit more. 6" to 8" is pretty much ideal for your boat.
I have a 5 1/2 Manual jp with 2" spacers and it's perfect. I added the spacers 2 summers ago and I gained about 1-2 mph on average. I wouldn't go any further back though.
