    1986 Johnson problems and ?'s

Ok, this will be somewhat long, but I have some important questions. My motor is a 1986 Johnson, Model J60TLC, Serial J5987111.
I have been having problems with it , mainly it seems to be getting air or no gas. I will be going down the lake and and it will lose power. Replaces the whole fuel line, cleaned out the fuel tank. carbs have been cleaned and kits put in. After the carbs were cleaned, the motor now seems to idle very high and will not get out the hole. I will let it sit for a few seconds and then it will go fine. After about five minutes it will start the acting like its not getting fuel or air is in the line.

I switched the foot on this motor. For the first six or seven times I used it after switching the foot it ran great! No problems at all. then one day, going down the lake it started. This weekend I plan on changing the power packs and the plugs, plugs are pretty dirty. Got two power packs from the engine the foot came off.
Also, where is the idle screw on this engine? This leads to my next question. Anyone got a repair manual they want to sell? i have a couple fishing reels if you want to trade.

The mechanic I have had working on the motor has been a pain and I am doing some of this myself. I would like to do as much as I canm before taking it to another mechanic. I appreciate any help! Also I have done searches on here and looked at newer posts. It seems like I have done everything that I can find in a search. Please help!!! I am getting aggravated and I want to fish!!!!!!!!!
Lastly I just repainted the cowling. I need some Johnson Stickers to put on it. Where can I find them?

    Thanks so much in advance.

Sounds like you forgot the carb gaskets that mate the carbs to the intake or the carbs are loose. You can't get the decals any longer nor the manual from BRP due to age. Best bet would be a sign shop for the decals or E-bay. E-bay for the manual, or http://www.outboardbooks.com or a Sealoc manual.
Pretty sure from what I remember that the 60 had a fixed idle jet the 75 was adjustable. I haven't worked on one of these puppies in years.

No spark, intermittent spark or spark on one cylinder only to name a few possible failure modes of a a power pack assy.

Spray some wd-40 around the intake/carb gaskets, if it stabilizes then replace the gasket

Re: 1986 Johnson problems and ?'s (ChampioNman)

thanks Championman. I tried that, but nothing changed. I took it out to the lake and it actually felt like it had mopre power. Came out the hole better, but still felt like it was loosing fuel or getting air. Guess I am going to have to break down and take it to a reasl mechanic. thanks for all the help

Still trying to get my engine talk right. The engine is missing. When I crank it up, it runs fine for a few minutes and then you can hear the miss. Does it intermittenly, there is no pattern. I have done about everything I think I can do. Changed the spark plug wires today as well. Any last suggestions before it goes to the shop?????

    Thanks

    Paul,
With the model year of your motor I would suggest either you or the dealer do a leak down test on the motor. It will surprise you what it finds. I'll bet most of your issues with the motor is related to carbon buildup.

Champion, please excuse my ignorance. what is a leakdown test? Explain it to me and I will decide if its something I can do or not.

    Thanks again Champion!!

That is some thing best left to the shop to do, if you don't know what you are doing you can injure yourself very easily. You have to inject air into the cylinder and move the piston via the flywheel.

Maybe this will help you understand what is involved with a leakdown test. However, take heed to what the ChamNman said. You can seriously hurt yourself doing a leakdown test on your engine if you are not careful.

Re: 1986 Johnson problems and ?'s (DoferGofer)

Thanks Champion and Dofer.... but that will be a negative on the leakdown test for me. As I did some further reading and talked to a buddy, I removed the NGK plugs and replaced them with Champion plugs. T/T is not working right now, so could not get it in the water. when I ran the motor at the house it did not skip anymore. So HOPEFULLY that was the problem.

Thanks for all the help. If it continues, I am just gonna take it to the dealer.
