    Lower unit

I hit a stump last week and messed up the gears in my lower unit, so I had to deal with the insurance company with this. Anyway they sent a after market case and gears that I had to pay the overnight shipping from Alabama because I needed it for a 120 boat charity tournament Saturday. Well I did not know it was after market until it showed up, there was no hole for the speedo pick up on the bottom and no hole towards the top of the case were the hose connects to. The case does not bolt up even there is a 1/8 inch hanging over on one side and the other side is flush. The anode bolt up threads had to be tapped to get it in, had to file the casting to even get the anode in place. The case itself looks like it has been patched on all sides its not smooth at all. And to top it off my boat ran 5mph gps slower now
I guess all I'm doing is venting, but I'm not happy and told the insurance company this they are coming out Thursday to look at it.
The motor is a 1996 Johnson Faststrike and I was told they do not make that case anymore. The only plus out of this is I have more water pressure and they said that is because of the new water pick up area that is different from my own case.
I know this is the cheapest way for the insurance company and the motor is a 1996 but I was wondering if this is what is normally done for a boat and motor this old.
    Sorry for the rant.

    Re: Lower unit (Wags186)

I can't imagine some aftermarket co. is casting lower unit cases. There are plenty of those ole cases that could have been rebuilt for your motor. If I were you I'd really complain about the shoddy craftsmanship and poor performance and see if you couldn't just get the money for a new or re-built one. You need to contact GEARCASEMAN, he has a great reputation on the boards and he can tell you what to expect to find out there...............G

I'm pretty sure the gearcases come from China.

    Re: Lower unit (ChampioNman)

well i called progressive this morning and turned in my claim, they said i had to take the entire boat to a local marine shop for them to tear down the lower unit and access it. it has a dent in the front of the bullet and the gear case if full of metal, so i dont see how they can not take care of my claim. i also talked to Eddie pope [gear case man] this morning and he has a new housing with all new guts at a heck of a price so i told the adjuster about him and he said he could not make any decisions until the tear down. i also told him about the problem that one of the board members was having with progressive and made it plain that i was not going that route, i also reminded him that the B.B.C. was a large community and that progressive did not need any more bad press on it. i will just have to wait and see what their decision is. i have all my trucks and cars insured threw progressive right now but that could change quickly. i will let you know what happens. oldfishinfool

    Re: Lower unit (Wags186)

All I know is I got at LU from them for a customer of mine. I bolted it up at his request and told him that the LU is not a BRP replacement LU and the H20 passages were not like the original. He told me to install the LU and I did, filled the LU with fluid and 2 hrs later he blew his 175 FS 60^. Your choice.

    Re: Lower unit (ChampioNman)

well i guess i will have to bit my tounge, progressive agreed to replace my lower unit but the adjuster said it would come from outboard recycler's in ala. i told him that that would not work and told him again about eddie and the price he had gave me for a new housing and new o.m.c. gears he ask for eddies ph# and today he is mailing me a check for the new L/U from eddie and the labor for the shop that is doing the swap. so other than being without my boat for a couple of weeks everything worked out fine. hats off to eddie for all his help and to progressive for doing whats right. oldsfishinfool
