    1999 175 Johnson

Started having problems with the check engine alarm. It goes off after you get on plane and start to trim the motor up. It will also go off if you hit a wave just right. It will go off and then after a few minutes the alarm and light will turn off. Water pump is working excellent-- Didn't know if there this might be a sensor problem or something more drastic.

    Model #: J175PLEES

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The check engine light means a fuel restriction, if you are carb'd. If FFI, then Lj can't help ya. Sorry.

It is carbed, on your R81 is that a dual or single tank? Sounds like a fuel restriction alarm if you are close to 5K rpm, and the speed doesn't fall off. You can temporarily disconnect the vacuum switch to verify it is coming from there. Take the airbox cover off and next to the VRO pump you will see the Vacuum switch unplug the tan wire and then attach the airbox and run the motor. If no alarm you need to check the fuel system.

It is a single 40 gallon tank. The motor runs like a scalded dog even when the alarm goes off. When the alarm went off the first time we stopped to check to make sure it was still peeing. After the first couple of times of stopping, I decided to keep going to see if the alarm would stay on or if would turn off after a few seconds. There is no loss of power or anything when the alarm goes off.

Then that would be the vacuum switch simply unplug it and see if the alarm sounds.

    Re: 1999 175 Johnson (ChampioNman)

What is the VRO pump and where would it be located. I have the air filter intake off and am not sure which wire to unplug. Will I need to get a new switch or if I unplug it will it be ok without having it hooked up.

    Thanks

    Re: 1999 175 Johnson (jcfelder)

The VRO pump is in the center with all the hoses going into it the vacuum switch will be just to the left of it. It has one tan wire. You are only disconnecting it for test purposes not for infinity. If the alarm goes away you have a fuel restriction issue, meaning the switch senses there is not enough fuel being delivered to satisfy the motors need for fuel at the higher RPM. You will need to find out what is causing this and correct it.

ChampioNman, is the vaccum wire a brown and black wire on a snap connect. This is the only brown wire I see under the air box.

    Thanks.

    Re: 1999 175 Johnson (budsbud66)

I don't see where you can just take loose the brown wire without pulling it out of the sealed switch area. If I disconnect at the snap it will disconnect both the brown and black wire.

The last I checked my bulb was ok, I just replaced the bulb because I thought that the my last one had dry rotted. Turns out my fuel/water separater had vibrated loose and I was catching air.

Do different primer bulbs act differently, cause come to thank about it non of my alarm buzzers or any troubles started until I changed the bulb.

Did you replace it with a BRP bulb 3/8" fittings? they are yellow at both barbs. And yes just unplug the connector. You should have 3/8" fuel line from the tank to the motor. If you put a 5/16" bulb on that would cause the fuel restriction.

    Re: 1999 175 Johnson (ChampioNman)

Thanks guys for all your help. The new primer bulb I got was 5/16 instead of 3/8 so this should fix my problem. I will put my old bulb back on.

    Thanks again
