    My z520 gets loose

Im wondering if any of you guys have experienced this before. I'll be cruising along at 55mph or so and the reared of the boat will get loose all of a sudden and kick to one side. I'm only trimmed a little bit just enough to run 50 or 55. My z20 or my 21i never did this and I'm wondering if it would be considered bow hook or if any other z520 owners have experienced this.

My z520 does this sometimes but only at higher speeds between 70 and 75. The feeling is that the steering has slack in but i know it doesnt. The only thing i can think of is it is slipping form one side of the pad to the other.

My older 520 does this. I was told it was just in between spots on the pad. I bump the trim and it doesnt do it anymore. Ive been in several different boats that do it.

My 08 does it a small kick to right at 55 or so my friend said the 08 was known for it and the slide when you let off at high speeds.

My R83 will do it as well, if the trim is in the right spot. I just bump the trim down and back up and its gone. I understand it as prop slip but may be wrong.

Check this nut and make sure it is tight, sometimes the kittle set screw backs out some and that nut will back off causing your steering to have a lot of play in it.

my 520vx will get loose occassionally too, playing around with the trim seems to help.

Re: My z520 gets loose (RangerJim)

It kinda feels like driving a muscle car and hammering on it from a 3rd gear roll. It kinda has that kick out to one side feeling. That's the best way I know how to describe it. To be honest it doesn't feel real safe. It's kinda like the boat wants to go it's own direction for a second without me doing anything different.

..............check steering Jam Nut that Rodney mentioned above. shouldn't be any side to side wiggle in lower unit of engine ..................if so, this is the problem that is causing your problem ...............................RR

My R91 does it, 4500 rpms @ 1/2 trim, I just bump the trim up or down. I noticed it more when I tried running a Trophy prop.

Its the prop. Even my 518 did it at 65 with a yahama prop . Went to tempest & Trophy no more problems

My Triton used to do that all the time when the water was slick. It scared the heck out of me. I always figured it was b/c my skeg was a little bent.

Used to get it with a Fury on my 520VX with 225 Opti. Slight trim down made it go away. I haven't noticed it since moving to a Trophy Plus.

Mine does it too. I've learned to ignore it as it doesn't cause a major course correction. It sure scare the passenger tho.

I have a 2012 521 with a 250 ProXs and a 25 Fury. It does the same thing, only at lower speeds.

It doesn't bother me. It almost feels like the prop slips or something.

Mine does it sometimes too. I always thought it might be the point when the keel lifts out of the water and the hulls tracking surface changes.

Re: My z520 gets loose (TJEli)

What most of you guys are describing can be caused by the prop changing "bite". The prop is ventilating some at various speeds/trim angles. When you get to the point where the prop stops ventilating, it gets traction, and quickly torques to one side momentarily. Every rig and setup will vary as to whether and when you get this.
