    Lower unit

Hi all I have a 1980 evinrude 115 HP and noticed a cream color oil coming out under the prop area. My ? is how hard is it to replace the prop shaft seals. Also the oil in the lower unit is the same color now and I just changed it .Owell.

    Re: Lower unit (80champ)

You may call anytime, I'll try to help. The Propshaft seals are not hard to replace, but it can be a very tedious job at times. First, you have to remove the rear bearing carrier, which can be a bear sometimes, since we're talking about a 28 year old motor. Once out, you have 5 "O" rings to replace as well. Make sure everything is spic and span clean before reinstalling the carrier. You'll need 2 guide pins to install the carrier, 2 pieces of all thread rod, 1/4" fine thread will work. Just screw them in to the retainer plate @ 3 turns and you're in business. Carefully tap the carrier back in with the rods 180 degrees apart, then install 2 of your 1/4" bolts snug but not tight. Take out the rods and install the other 2 bolts, and tighten all 4 evenly. You can use some sealant on these bolts to help the process as well. Use grease on the large "O" ring.
