2003 Johnson 150 HP start problems

I just bought a 2003 Johnson 150 HP with a 18 ft Triton. 1st time at the lake, the boat stated and ran fine at launch with the motor cold. Went to several spots to fish, shut down the motor. Tried to start 30- 60 minutes later and it took about 20 starts each time. It would start and then die, start and die. I would try to put it in neutral if it didnt die first and then try to rev it up but it would often die. If i got it to run and put it into gear, it would die. Finally after 20 starts or so each time, I would manage to get it running and then if I could get it past idle, it would run fine at high speeds and rpms. I hope this is not common to this model Johnson?? Hopefully it is something simple. HELP!!!

Tim- post your model and serial numbers for the mods... there are just too many variables out there to list without the numbers in question... They will be along shortly, so post the numbers when you can...

Does the motor spit and cough when you get it started? Did you try to push the key in when it stumbled? Usually that will tell you if its lean.

I tried applying the choke( push the key in while starting). Stilll had the same problems!! I found a link on iboats.com regarding the problem i have described. The link seemed to indicate that this problem is common to this model Johnson. I would post the link but i am a computer idiot.

Johnson Evinrude ,didn't make motors that will not idle right. Something is not right or it will idle. The gurus will get to it ,now that the classic is over and the weekend!!!

Ive read some threads on iboats that suggest idle mixture issues or the primer bulb being bad???

Your starting problems could be a few things.
Do you see any fuel leaks?
Does the motor idle with out dieing when it does start and run?
What is the idle RPM when it does run?

No fuel leaks seen. It will usually take several starts before I can even get it to idle. The RPM's were at about 1100 when it did idle if I remember correctly??

The Idle mixture screws were adjusted on carbs. Took boat out today with same result. Boat ran great cold but was pain in the neck to get started after I shut it down and then tried to start it again 20 minutes later?? Fair amount of smoke from motor when boat is started after having sat for a while?? HELP!!!
