1992 Johnson 150 GT VRO oil question

    Hi all,

I have a 1992 Johnson 150 GT VRO and the VRO is still being used. What oil should I be using, XD50? On a side note, should I disable the VRO and mix myself? I recently purchased the boat and would like to keep it a while. Help much appreciated.
    Thanks

Re: 1992 Johnson 150 GT VRO oil question (CRANK-IN)

I wouldn't disconnect it pre-mixing is a pain. XD-50 is the better oil for your motor especially if your dealer carries it in bulk. XD-30 will work just fine too. You still need to de-carb every 100 hours. To verify if you have the new style VRO/OMS look at the top of the unit where the fuel line comes out. If you see a silver metal collar with two torx head screws on it then you have the new style. If it has the brown plastic 90* elbow glued on then that is the old style.

    Thanks ChampioNman,

I have not looked to see if I have the new or old yet, but say if I had the old, should I upgrade to the new ASAP? If so, could you give me an estimate(in the range) of the cost..parts/labor?

    Thank you in advance!

If you can handle the job yourself (easy) you'll save on the labor $$$ you'll need part number 5007420 list $345.00. as long as you are using oil then I would let it be just test the alarms, both low oil and no oil on the motor.

Re: 1992 Johnson 150 GT VRO oil question (javelin90)

There are specific test to monitor the oil flow and they are in the service manuals. To test the alarm functionality, separate the wire connectors on the block that have the tan wires on them. There are 5,,, 2 temp, 1 fuel restriction and 2 for oil on for no oil and one for low oil, Make up a jumper and turn the key on, touch the jumper to ground and see if the alarm sounds. If not contact SeaHorse.
