Need opinions on Graph and Transducer location.. - Thoughts?

Well - I got the Front graph installed and it went very smoove. I'm routing everyting into the starboard rod box and hooking up the LSS there (on advice from a buddy with hundreds of installations under his belt)

Wanted some thoughts about the rear graph / side scan transducer.

Okay - this might be weird - I assume the majority of guys put their console graphs to the right of the console - but is there any advantage/disadvantage (other than maybe being in the way) to putting it to the left of the console? I was wondering if it'd be easier for a partner to also view the screen while the driver is busy 'driving' ? Anybody ever do that? or is that patenly stupid?

And then related to the sidescan transducer. I understand putting it on the JP is popular but if I go straight into the transom - am I 'close' with my mark? The rear angles on the Champions help with cornering - but it does reduce the amount of transom space. I think the SideScan is supposed to be a bit offset from the normal puck transducer that shoots thru the hull. I'll likely put it in next to the in-dash flasher unit.

I'm assuming I can just come up and over the transom and run the cables right in with the steering, gas, etc 'bundle'. (sorry - it's not the closest pic - but I think it gets you the idea.)

You will need to get the sidescan transducer below the jackplate. It needs to be able to see both sides of the boat without obstructions.

Correct I highly reccomend the Transducer Shield and Saver brackets mounted to the bottom side of the JP. It positions the LSS-1 correctly against the transom and no holes are drilled into the boat itself. Some people mount the Lss-1 to the bottom of a hole shot plate on the JP as well....

Yeah - thanks - you're the second one to recommend that bracket. I think I'll give that a serious look. I was wondering how it could see both sides w/o getting UNDER the JP.

Not sure I know what the 'hole-shot' part is...

    Thanks!

I've seen a couple of installations w/graph on the left. Wouldn't work for me, I'd kick that sucker off the first time out! Maybe with a swing-away bracket of some type though?

It's a plate that goes on the bottom of the JP to keep water out and get on plane faster...

IMHO, mounting the graph on the inboard side of the console is asking for it to be knocked off/broken... and possibly even crack the glass on the console if hit hard enough...

Okay - I get it - kind of a high-tech version of those ugly hydrofoils. Can't imagine needing one on my 181. That sucker flies out of the hole.

Lea - I'm inclined to agree with you. Even with a single console - I'd have to believe it'd be in the way. It'be nice at idle but I think I'm just gonna go the normal route and put it on the outside of the console with a RAM mount.

Another option with your 181 beihg a Mt. Home boat is go with the taller windshield which gives you room to mount on top of the console.

the mark on transom is too high, will be out of water on plane

My understanding is that sidescan can only be read at idle anyway...so it would not matter if it is out of water on plane.

That's my understanding too. Only usable at 1-6 mph? Something like that?

But this idea of a taller windshield is awesome!!! I love that. I would love to have that unit right there in the center of the console...

    Thanks !

Thanks Butch! Your console is slightly different - I dont' think I have room to put it exactly the way you did but that would be my preference. I'm probably gonna have to go out on the gunnel area to have a good flat spot.

Say - if you ever get back down here - we need to do a rain-check for not hooking up like we tried last year. Woulda been fun.

Can you get a taller windshield for an 05 198? I'd like that on the drivers side.

I mounted my 898 on a 1.5 inch RAM mount to the right of my console - go with the longer arm and you can adjust it where it is very easy to view. I haven't put on a bow mount unit yet.

Re: Need opinions on Graph and Transducer location.. - Thoughts? (lwlittle)

I would mount it off the side of the console (starboard) rather the boring into the gunnel. Looking @ your pic there is plenty of room for a 1.0 or 1.5 ram base.

I'M not a fan of blocking the view while driving so off to the side is best to me.

If that area on the (Console) is not perfectly flat: use some good old American fabing, a thick piece of rubber under the base (hardware store).

The rubber will conform to the surface(s) as the bolts are tightened.

Butch, I really have no problem with the vision, I'm 5'11, don't know if that matters... Leonard you might check with C&O on the windshield. I know Custom Mold can make a replacement if you send them one, they might be able to match your hole pattern with the tall one. It is nice to tuck behind in rain and sleet...

Yeah - I think I'm gonna try to put it on the side of the console. I agree - that would be better than going thru the gunnel. I'm sure I can rig up something

    Thanks for the tip Butch..
